Over to the crowd for continued discussion.

Is part of the spool about this video because he is uniform? If he was in civvies, would anyone care? Does being in uniform necessitate acting in a more professional manner?

It's like the guys I see at the Wild Orchid during Tailhook in their flight suit. I don't give a shit about being at a strip club, just don't be in uniform.

I've gone swimming in the fountain at the Pensacola O club in a flight suit. . . I'd say that it was less professional than this dance. There was a General and a Captain that observed . . . not a word was said, heck, I tried to get the General to join.

There is what we have all done while drinking and then there is how we are supposed to act. Trust me I have that in spades...
Not trying to get on a high horse, "never would have done that" because I have failed miserably in my career on more than one occasion. Where do we start drawing the line on what is acceptable, especially when the uniform is involved?

Even after serving time on a three-star staff, I've never seen a flag officer so obviously looking at someone like they had a dick growing out of their forehead. :p

I am getting the impression between this video and the Naval Academy's social media page (look at their instagram) that they made SWO selection this year a little bit more "fun." I mean, they were giving away little meme type props to take photos for the instagram (including a sign that says "lit" with an arrow pointing to the holder) and the fact that they were selecting in somewhere other than Memorial Hall (looks like they were in Alumni Hall - the basketball stadium) indicates to me the mood was supposed to be more fun. I suspect this Mid's behavior was encouraged, all in an attempt to make SWOs seem fun? In one night of the Aviator selects (figure 250 of us or so) we all did a community brief and then green lighted the senior aviator's house on Commanders' Row. Those houses can't accommodate 250 people for anyone who has been in one. I imagine the SWOs have wanted to get in on making their community look more fun for a couple years now.

If we did it that way, I'd place a lot of value on a ranking board by the SWO LTs at USNA. That, or some type of drinking contest...

The good thing about the way we do it is the Mid has some level of buy-in when for your ship when he pulls it off the board. Maybe they really want to go to that homeport, maybe they're really interested in that platform, or whatever. If we drafted, the Mid wouldn't get that buy-in and might not be as moto to come join your team. You're a VFA guy, presumably you picked that because it interested you; how would you have felt if you'd been drafted by another community?

I knew it! We aren't so different. And you're right- I think someone telling me "needs of the Navy" would have been easier to swallow than "VFA wanted this other guy, you selected floor waxers." Which is precisely what would have happened if anyone in the fleet had actually known me in flight school. ;)

Why? If he was worried about he consequences of his actions, he should have acted differently.
To be honest, I really don't care about his actions..it is not a big deal. What "makes" it a big deal is that it was recorded and that means it is now, in the language of the internet...forever. That is too bad for him. I am sure he is a solid mid and will be a good ship driver. He just has a little baggage to carry around now.

I'm sure he's getting doxxed all over the place elsewhere, but I was kind of hoping we could be better and more mature. Should we be enabling random actors with the tools to render those consequences from all over the world? Won't he have a CO very soon to take care of that? Doesn't he have one now?
