Looking for a female perspective on OCS

Also don't fret over the swimsuit. There was a girl in my class who had a 1" purple strip down the side of hers and no one said anything.

Yes you can keep your hair long. Yes you should either practice putting it up fast and sleek or chop it off. No they will not cut your hair unless you want them to.

Just left OCS in October

Congratulations!! I'm heading to Newport in February. Thank you for the information! Another quick question if you don't mind, for PT would I then need to secure my hair in a sleek ponytail? Low ponytail or mid?

Doesn't have to be in a bun but has to completely up and within regs (quick google search can get you specifics). No ponytails allowed for PT. I practiced putting it in a bun and running to make sure it wouldn't fall out before I got there. Amazing what a lot of gel can do for you.

I don't know how you guys endure the long hair. I have my hair in a shorter-than-pixie cut style and I wouldn't have it any other way. From one female to you all, you guys are the real MVPs.

Question: (and sorry if this has already been asked prior in this forum, haven't gotten through all the pages yet.) When I was dual processing with recruiters, I was researching Navy Basic Training stuff and at the initial medical exam when you arrived at Great Lakes, I discovered in my research that they do pap smears if you didn't have documentation of a recent one. Any recent OCS Ensigns have any input on this for Newport? If they do pap smears, did anyone have the option of having it waived if you had documentation of a recent one (and how recent was it?)

Thanks!

I have a question about hair now that the rules have seemingly changed. Does anyone know if they actually are allowing you to keep your hair long instead of chopping it off? (For Navy OCS) If so, should I start practicing putting my hair up, or should I expect it to be cut anyways.. Hair is hair, but mine does not grow quickly at all and I know that the in between bob-bun length phase sucks.

Learn how to do a sock bun. You aren't allowed to use any hair pins except the clips they give you (or ones you buy at the NEX later on), and lots of hair ties and gel. My hair is long and I managed through all of OCS. I would recommend either having a pixie cut or long hair. Having the chin length hair was more of an inconvenience for some of my roommates because you're basically always sweating.

I've read all the pages and people have mentioned birth control pills are allowed, my question is just where are they kept? Are you allowed to keep them in your own belongings or are they by regulation supposed to be kept elsewhere? Also for the pap smear thing SoopurHero816 and anyone that wonders this later on, if you have a pap done within 1 year of submitting your package, you can use the medical paperwork from your GYN as proof. If not, you need a new one and to provide medical paperwork to prove you've had a new one done with your own doctor. This is according to my processor right now as I'm currently getting all of that paperwork together.

Aside from the birth control thing, I do have another question. All the gouges I have read, even the one updated as of 5MAY, state that our sports bras must be white. But I've been verbally told by those who have attended that it didn't matter what color underwear or sports bras a female brought with them. Can a recent attendee chime in here? In addition, what have you ladies found to be the best, most supportive, preferably underwire, sports bras to bring with you that aren't like removing a straitjacket when you're sweaty and are suffering from Trex arms from workouts? I find front-clasping to be the best but they're very hard to find in larger sizes. Any input is appreciated!

No body likes a braggart.

On a more serious note so I don't derail the thread... Disclaimer: I'm not female and I haven't been to OCS...

One thing to keep in mind is that blouses don't have liners like trousers do, so if you're wearing darker underwear, it might show through in Whites. How much that matters? I have no idea (see disclaimer).

Lol this guy. To your points, I have considered that though, so I intended to bring nude colored for whites. My biggest concern were the bras because sports bras that I need usually don't come in neutral colors so I'd wanted some input from a recent attendee about how truly concerned they are with their colors.

Sports bras don't have to be white. There are some DIs who don't like to be able to see them through the yellow shirt though. I found white and black were both appropriate. When you start getting into bright colors, they show more but I still wore a bright blue one every now and then and didn't get into trouble. As far as best? I'd invest in a couple meant for runners. They also have white ones there for purchase that were actually pretty good. No underwire though. No front clasp either. I've never seen those details in a sports bra.

AttackCanary,

Thank you so much for your reply! That makes me feel better about the bras I am leaning toward when my time comes. Underwire and front-clasp sports bras are pretty abundant in specialty shops for large chests and online on websites for the same, and some non-underwire front-clasping are at places such as Target, Kohl's, etc. Recently, Victoria's Secret has come out with their fitness gear and their Knockout Bra is front clasping with two styles: one is an underwire bra inside a soft bra, and another is just a regular soft bra; and they're both easy and quick to get on and off when I'm sore and sweaty. https://www.victoriassecret.com/victorias-secret-sport/front-close-bras . My concern about colors stemmed from those coming in a variety of outrageously bright geometric patterns as well as one heather grey framed in black and a white framed in black. Knowing they don't have to be pure white is helpful because that means I can stop my hunt lol.

A further update on the pap thing for those concerned, I just received my email about prelims and on that official email it states as long as it has been done within two years of your submission, it is valid. My processor was mistaken with the one year answer.

I have a hair question. I'm practicing putting my hair up in a bun that's within regulation but my problem is that I have curly hair and when I work out it usually gets very frizzy (as in there is often an inch high "cloud" of frizz around my head). Am I going to have to slather it in some sort of gel or other product or is the frizz acceptable during PT?

I would suggest slathering on the gel. Some frizz is expected during PT (you may still get flack from it...an inch may be too much), but you won't have long to fix your hair after PT so you want to make it as easy as possible to fix.
