Random question...
Putting together ribbons/medals. I've ordered the whole ribbon rack.

The medals are a chunk of change. Can I do top five, three, or should I do all nine?

What is it for? If you want to save cash top five will probably do you fine but you will technically be out of uniform, depending on the command that may or may not matter. That is why I ask what is it for?

There are some cheaper options for the medals, one of the local NEX's here sews them together and that is a lot cheaper than the online companies that can run over $100-$200 for nine medals. That NEX does an unusual amount of medals though so they know what they are doing, I am not sure all can do it and a decent job of it if they do.

Every time I've gotten a quote from the NEX they want $7/medal for mounting alone. That doesn't count cost to buy the medals and the rack and the accoutrements to go with

Edit: my issued ones are a bit worn, and some I never got issued (GWOT/Sea Service/Iraqi Campaign) so starting fresh makes more sense

Check a few online companies, they will all likely charge much more for the whole thing than the NEX. It sucks but we don't have much choice.

Do the do-it-yourself method, the little cardboard sticky tape thing that they sell at the NEX. If you do it correctly I guarantee you can't tell a difference. Just take your time with it.

Yes,
$190 is about average...at least I should be good for the next 5 years or so, other than the additional star here/there...

For folks that don't know, you are authorized a brand new replacement set of ALL your ribbons and medals from PERS. I'll try and post the address/info in between classes today. Cheers . . . .

OK, found it:

Yikes. Granted I'm not a VP war hero, but I got a full rack of ribbons, mirrored rack of ribbons (for Full Dress), and a full spread of large medals for well under $190 from Ultra Thin. This was about 3 or 4 months ago. Plus they'll remount new ones as you acquire more for a small fee.

image.jpg Moving most of my crap on to the boat today.

I got stuck climbing one of the ladders through a hatch...
Had a sea bag on my shoulders, a big garment bag in front, and a big duffle full of shoes on the left side.

Top of the seabag wedged between me and the overhead, I couldn't figure out what the fuck was happening.

At least there were no witnesses...

You mean give away or deep six most of it the last few days underway you have?
Pro Tip: When discarding your "empties" during westbound trans-lant, plan better than my S-3 neighbors who chucked a garbage bag over from the port side (fwd) only to hear the unmistakable sound of shattering glass on a missile sponson... 1 below for mission planning.
