Little Equipment Help

I flew a nav leg today with an iPad Mini and the Foreflight app (the $150 subscription). First time using both. It was about an hour hop and I didn’t go above 15k. Only a few observations at this point. The glare sucked at times as it sit on my left knee. No issues with the Mini’s internal GPS. It tracked me from start up until shut down…the app showed me taxing out, on the SID, on the J-route (that’s on the high charts for you chopper dudes) and on the TACAN approach. I don’t see a need for it in the local area. It will be very useful for flying nav legs outside the local area and at unfamiliar airports. I still brought paper pubs but it could easily replace them and … (I want to throw a WSO joke in here but I’m only one bottle of wine deep at this point).

Hopefully you are drinking that bottle with more than just by yourself, otherwise the joke is on you! ;)

Meh... I drink alone, with nobody else. You know when I drink alone, I prefer to be by myself...

I started drinking it with my ole lady...she's in bed and I'm on AW...

Some of my best friends are WSO's and some of the best Marines I have been around in my 18 years are WSO's. I still like to throw a jab or two at'em when I can though. Ask me 10 years ago and I would have said give me the extra gas...ask me now and I'll say give me a (good) WSO to share the work load, both airborne and on the ground. Given all the stupid-ass ground jobs that are found in squadrons these days, ~34-36 aircrew is much much better than ~18 in a single seat squadron.

Back to the "little equipment" topic... I didn't mention it but the GPS in the Mini works fine without a cell plan. Like I said, it tracked me from start up to shut down. It’s my understanding that the WiFi-only Mini does not have an integrated GPS. For internet on the road, I used the hot spot function on my Droid Razr and my Mini’s WiFi had no problem connecting.

Nope, I've got the Wifi only model and there is no GPS...I read somewhere that the gps equipped model is capable of using the Russian equivalent satellites, too?

I did take the mini and a bluetooth GPS receiver into the Warpig on a few occasions; glare was, as you mentioned, an issue, but other than that, it worked awesomely with fore flight. I don't have the upgraded uber-subscription that will overlay your position on a plate, but it's pretty damn useful for looking up obscure points, tracking progress on a xc, and general SA.

Does anyone use a kneeboard made for the iPad? Any reviews for OCONUS use?

I had one of the side clip ones (forget the name) for the full-size ipad and used it in Afghanistan a little. The regular ipad is just too big for a cockpit - especially when stuck to your leg. That, and the fixed angle didn't often work with the glare. As for the clip kneeboard itself, ya it worked fine.

My advice to you - buy a mini and use a 9G kneeboard. It fits perfectly.

So I just bought a pen iPad mini to use in the cockpit. A couple of questions:

- What kneeboard works with the otter box? What kneeboard should I get? I have 2 9g kneeboards but mounting it on there seems not too sturdy. Maybe I'm not doing it right.

- nvg compatible film? Is it needed, recommended?

Thanks.

Not a jet guy, but would reccomend going to HD or Lowes and getting the most industrial velcro you can find. I would put the fuzzy loop side all over the back of the ipad so I could handle it sans kneeboard without getting annoyed. Hook side all over the 9g. I might even rip off the clip from the top of the included clipboard and just use it as a dedicated setup.

Makesure you prep both surfaces with some rubbing alcohol so both are free of any oils that will make it peel over time. My guess is the heat will eventually get to the glue, but your framers have double-bubble (epoxy) for that fix.

Do they make nvg compatible film? Need to look into that.
