USN Likelihood of lateral transfer from SWO to EDO

I'm a SWO applicant starting OCS this October, however sometime after being PROREC'd, I decided I want to put my engineering degree to good use by becoming an EDO. I know public.navy.mil already has info about becoming an EDO, but does anyone know what the likelihood is to transfer from SWO to EDO? Obviously I'll try my hardest to achieve that goal, but I'm just curious.

I've seen a few folks make the hop from SWO to EDO. Is it possible? Yes! Is it going to be easy? By no means. Your best bet is once you get close to obtaining your SWO pin/qualification is reach out to the local EDOs in your area and start networking and receiving some good mentorship. Around this same time I would start reading the lateral transfer board messages to make sure your commissioning Year Group (YG) is allowing EDOs. At times you'll see certain YGs are eligible to apply for a certain lat transfer program.

But for now, focus on getting qualified and EDO/such later.

Will do. Thanks Rufio!

Doable, but competitive.

Do it after your DivO tours (first 4 years) because that's the typical transfer timeframe to jump over to EDO. If you apply at the first opportunity, there will be opportunities to jump in, because EDO relies on meeting manning requirements by picking up lat transfers.

Key is to perform well as a SWO (they want to know you absorb as much SWO knowledge as possible before you jump...you won't have another opportunity to learn it), and then to try to do as much EDO type work as possible. If you can't do that during your sea tours, do it during a shore tour....there are a lot of EDO heavy commands with SWO JO billets.

For the first 4 years, learn as much as I can and look for EDO-type work. Got it. Thanks for the advice, BigRed!
