All,

Quick question that seems to be similar to Snakes. I left active duty this past September, immediately joined SELRES and started 2-year AD recall orders as a CANREC. I was below zone last year for the active duty O-4 board and it looks like I'll be above zone for this coming reserve O-4 board based on the NAVADMIN. In short, I haven't had an 'official' look yet with a board and I'm above zone this year, will the board understand that or do you think I should write a letter? Thanks!
Usually, your first look as a SELRES is considered an "admin in zone" look. For all intents and purposes, it's treated as your first look even if you're more senior. AC FOSes don't count for the Reserves. SELRES also compete with IRR for promotion, and if cannon fodder is needed, three guesses as to who (usually) ends up being it first.

I'll post another anecdote: A good friend of mine is a former active 1320 who was 2xFOS'd and involuntarily separated from active duty. He made O-4 in the reserves (selres) on his first look. The promotion rate was something like 98% for his YG.

ETA: I see this is also my 1000th post. It's a nice, round number; I might lurk for a while. Fortunately, my flight hours > my posts on AW.

Yeah...you will have no problem selecting. The rates of selection for reserve O4 is high for most designators, plus you don't have to have the same or as many check-n-boxes as active.

Of course, for you specifically, the negative is you will have to leave your CANREC position as NRDs don't keep most reserve officers on the books when they make O4. They probably will let you finish the initial 2 years, though.
