Navy intel wha?

Hi fellas and ladies. I was shooting the breeze with my dad the other day (retired navy helicopter pilot) and we were trying to figure out what would be a good career path for me in the navy If i get selected and came across intel. I just graduated with a poli sci degree (i'm not too much of a tool I promise) and saw that my major blended with the intel officer position. He told me that the intel field was tough, but was kinda fun cause while preppin pilots you could throw some risky pics in there to keep it interesting .

So my questions are... What is a typical shift? Do I go in the air with my assigned squad? Is there a chance of getting assigned to a sub, because i'm trying to avoid that at all costs. Will I become the master of the risk board game/poker/beer drinker? Thanks for the answers if I get any.

1. Your homework assignment is to read this thread from start to last post. You'll find your answers there and more.

2. Intel is almost as hard to get as BUD/S. Use search and you'll find individual stories on AW of how hard it is. Point being: better start researching Plan B. May I suggest Information Warfare (IW)? There is a board here that contains threads with info including links to dedicated sites on that growing warfare specialty.

Assuming you mean "risque" pics, in which case your dad's a few years out of date. Centerfolds as "pic of the day" on the CVIC briefs went away when the girls came aboard. More's the pity.

Your other questions have been asked and answered by others. Search and enjoy.

But FWIW...your major doesn't really have a damn thing to do with what job would "suit you" in the Navy. And poli sci doesn't have much of anything to do with Navy Intel anyway.

1630 Intel-O Duties

Would any one be able to give me an overview of a basic 1630 billet for an Intel officer? Thank you and Merry Christmas. Thank you also to every one who is protecting our great Nation over the holidays.

there's a lot more to a poli sci degree than politics.

no there isn't. there isn't even much of that involved in getting a poli sci degree.

i spent 4 years at school, got a piece of paper that said i was a political scientist and woke up in the navy. wtf?!

I've been reading a few things on this site and feel kinda close to pin pointing what I want to shoot for in the Navy. First of all, I am in the process of applying and have been talking to an officer recruiter in my area (STL). There are a few things I am intrigued about. First, this statement:
"Our other spy was an athelete and ran with us on the flight deck, boomed with us on the beach and tuned into the Ready Room from the get-go. He later went to Naval Special Warfare and deployed with Task Units fitting in with SEALs as part of the team there."
This was taken from heyjoe in the same thread...does this mean that an Intel guy has the opportunity to not sit behind a desk all day? I would much rather do some hands on work "in the field" than sit in a room going over papers. Sorry to sound so amateur, but there is quite a lot of information. Also, how I do I communicate this to my recruiter?
One more...any advice on how to get some interviews with Navy Intel officers in the STL region?

Yes, you will have a chance to "get in the field." How much depends on what unit you are assigned to. You won't get those orders until you are at your basic Intel O school (NIOBC). Your recruiter will have no input on that.

Good to know...thanks.

Anyone know any Intel Officers in the STL region? I would love to get an interview or possible LOR.
