How about that North Korea?

Saw this in the news: https://www-m.cnn.com/2018/05/12/asia/north-korea-missile-test-pledge-intl/index.html

While I want to be optimistic and think that things are going in the right direction, I can’t help but shake a nagging feeling that something isn’t right. This all has happened so quickly that it’s suspicious.

They are shutting down a site that some experts say has become unusable for further nuke tests, so.....meh. The missile test pledge also is only for 'unannounced' tests, whatever that means. So if they tell folks 5 mins prior that the are going to test a missile all is well?

I think folks are right to be wary after the broken promises and agreements they have made before to the ROK and the US,

Who knows if it will pan out this way but certainly an interesting take. Economic incentives reporting via Bloomberg.

Kim Shifts Gear to Economy as North Korea Ditches Nuclear Tests
I wonder if he finally realized how ridiculous his country (and the Gaza strip) looks at night.

If you've never seen it for yourself, flying into Seoul at night and looking out the window is surreal- and the experience does not disappoint.

North Korea has Begun Dismantlement of the Punggye-ri Nuclear Test Site

https://www.38north.org/2018/05/punggye051418/

While this doesn't clarify many things (like whether they really cracked the mountain and rendered the site unusable anyways), at least it shows the Punggye-ri site is definitely shuttering. Writing my Masters thesis on the DPRK over the last two years was certainly interesting, given the timing of events. This has so many parallels to the summits of 2000 and 2007, and not necessarily in positive or productive ways. I'd place my bet on them going for "credible (enough) evidence of capability" vs. "demonstrable capability."

North Korea threatens to cancel Trump summit over US nuke demands

The only new thing about this time around was Kim actually going to Panmunjom and shaking hands with Moon. Otherwise, so far this is the same game with new players. They make a big deal about their willingness to talk. Then once everyone is all excited, they make demands that the US and ROK will never agree to - like withdrawal of USFK and cancellation of joint military exercises - and everything falls apart. They also tend to try this early on with each new US administration to see what they’ll get.

I would say I hope nobody wasted too much time prepping Trump’s Nobel acceptance speech, but based on the administration’s demonstrated competence I’m gonna guess they’ve spent the last couple months just furiously masturbating to the Fox News chatter about it.

Is there any other way to masturbate?

Well, if the Nobel committee is still handing out the Peace Prize on the apparent anticipation of great things, like in Obama's case, the Trump people have every reason to be optimistic. There is still hope for a positive outcome on the DPRK, no? Colonel Roosevelt must have rolled over in his grave on hearing about the Obama award.
