This may be a bit self-explanitory, but what exactly does HS, HSL, HC, and HM stand for? Which is usually the most competitive mission platform to get? I probably could have looked it up by now, but I'll just guess that HS=helo squadron, HC=helo combat, HL=helo logistics, and HM=helo medical??....just a stab.

snook, not sure about all the roles for the bubbas out there but i know a few of them.
HS is an anti-sub outfit usually attached to a carrier, LHD, LHC, although the primary role is anti-sub, they also do SAR, SpecWar support etc.
HSL (HS [Light])means you're gonna be on a small-boy like a mine sweep, destroyer...so on
HC is supply replenishment im guessing (hauling cargo from one ship to another while underway...alway fun)
as for HM, the only indicator i can gather is that its a marine squad...but i could be wrong.

<insert something witty here:>

Cool, thanks guys. I'm slowly getting accustomed to some of the military lingo here. Since I'm starting OCS in a few days I'm sure I'll get my fill very soon.

HM means "HELMINERON" or HELicopter MINE Countermeasures SqaudRON. HM-14 is out of Norfolk, VA, and HM-15 is out of CC, TX. HM-14 is not moving to TX. That gouge has been floating around for years, and there are absolutely no plans for it. 14 & 15 both fly the MH-53E. The FRS for the Navy 53's is in Norfolk, VA. The FRS is not a squadron, but uses 14's aircraft for the student pilots. If anyone is interested in Airborne Mine Countermeasures, look at www.amcm.org
HC-4 out of Sigonella also flies the MH-53E. Just a different primary mission area. It is a great bird. Flies very well, goes fast, and has a lot of legs (many many hours of gas).
