So, the unit list for the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal came out and CNET and subordinate commands are on the list (i.e.- ROTC units). I know the staff rate the medal, but do the stashed ensigns rate it as well? We are active duty and attached to the unit, but I don't know. Thanks.

When i originally talked to my unit Xo about it, he didn't think they could give it to me (but, he didn't seem to know anything about what commands were on the list). I got it while being stashed somewhere else that was authorized by SecNav to have its people recieve it.

Unless they recently changed the requirements for it, I thought you had to be part of a unit that was involved in either OEF or OIF? If ROTC stash Ensigns are getting it, then pretty much everyone should get it.

Sorry in advance for jumpin on the soap box. Don't be one of those guys trying to find out every single medal/ribbon that they could possibly be up for and can then put on their uniform.

That and honestly, if you are an aviator, WHO CARES! you are only going to be in khakis maybe 1 time every few months after API.

Regardless, I think if you are a stash Ensign for over 30 days you rate it. My Chief entered it into my record, so I'm pretty sure we rate it.

BCH, not trying to argue with you, but there is nothing wrong with keeping your uniform up-to-date. In fact... it's one of your responsibilities. I'm definently not a ribbon chaser, but I do try to keep my unifrom proper. Again, not trying to argue.

The new "I was alive in 2004" medal. PLus you get the old "I was alive" medal known as the NSDM.

IMHO, the ones that really matter are personal awards such as NAMS, NCM, Air Medals, and of course the pain award (Sea Service Deployment).

If you go to the awards website https://awards.navy.mil there is a note about people in 'initial acession training' and those who have not reported to their first duty station are not eligible. I read that as stashes not getting it... and CNATRA isn't listed, so SNA/SNFO no.

I don't think you'd rate a medal for being stashed with a unit anyway . . . you're TAD to that unit from another, not on PCS orders. Personally, right now I wouldn't wear a GWOTSM unless I had hard proof I rated one.

As for keeping one's uniform "up to date," IMHO it's better to miss wearing a medal that you do rate than to wear one you haven't earned. Not trying to bring anyone's integrity into question here, but I do seem to remember a certain CNO getting in hot water for that a few years ago. I also recall General Hagee voluntarily refusing to wear a couple of his decorations when the documentation, and thus the proof, was lost.

That said, I'm a little fuzzy on what "Initial Accession Training" or "Follow-on Training" mean. Does that mean Boot Camp and A or C-school for enlisted types? Flight School for us? All of the above?

Nittany, Thanks for your concern.

I had the same concerns about wearing a medal you didn't earn/rate, which was what sparked my inquiry with my unit XO and then my stash command (they sent all the active duty an email saying that they were getting it-otherwise I would never have thought about it).

I specifically asked about wheter or not my PTAD time from my unit counted towards the requirements. Knowing my situation (that I was waiting to go to flight school etc.), they said yes it did. When I recieved a copy of my page 13 they sent to PERS it read "member authorized to wear the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal in support of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM while assigned to..."

I figured that when the people I asked have, on average, more time in the navy then I have in age... that they probably know what was going on better then me.

But like Steve said, this is just a "participation" award. if the people who said i rated it change their mind, then out with the trash it goes... Too bad about Admiral Boorda though, everyone I talked to who knew him said he was a great guy.

Not so fast... Some squadrons have their duty standers wear khakis and I know lots of the P-3 squadrons make them wear khakis unless they're actually flying. I agree that one should not be a weasel to get awards that you probably don't deserve, but at the same time, you should make sure you get everything you rate.

It's all chest candy...

But, if you've earned it, wear it with pride. Why not?

However, it's important to remember the only thing that will get you promoted is "sustained superior performance in operational billets."

Image below was generated from a cool page 5th Fleet is linked to....

Link is: http://kepler.pratt.duke.edu/USNRibbons.html

I just need add to lots of gold stars, some Es and many small bronze stars....especially on the sea service ribbon....

Dining in + missing ribbons you rate + my command = Grog. (Seriously, they'll call you out) But, if you'd like to take the fine and drink that swill so you can feel better about me not ribbon hording feel free, I'll FedEx it to you.
