some good info about HI...

Steering this thread back toward Hawaii possession... does anyone else have any firsthand experience with PCS'ing guns to Hawaii? I'm leaving in September and I really want to take my 4 pistols, 3 (maybe 4, by then) rifles, and shotgun, but I'm afraid they might put me on a terrorist watch-list when I try to register them all. Any more advice/experience out there?

You show up, you drive down to HPD's headquarters (bring change for the parking meters) and then you bring your pile of guns into the station. Done.

I didn't do any of this (only had 3 guns at the time), but that was mostly due to ignorance.

Concur. It's a seamless process.

What sucks is that there are not many places to shoot here, and with so much else to do, I find myself shooting. . .well, never.

Why would you have to take your guns to the police station? To do what? Copy their serial numbers? Do you get some kind of receipt to prove that you've done it? What happens if you don't do this? Do other places do this?

Very strange.

Places to shoot in HI? I'd rent a boat go about 3 miles off shore, drop off a few 1 gallon jugs in the water and back off about 100 feet. Commence fun fam fire, aiming away from shore of course. It works in CA too. Depending on sea state, it gets challenging.

Just county law. I'm not sure if it's required on the other islands. I think if you register them, then you can't commit a crime with them. It's science.

If you don't have the "permit" (or whatever they call it), you could be queried at a public range. I shot at Koko Head once with a buddy and no one asked me (fortunately). I don't remember if it's a misdemeanor or felony, but either way, probably not something you want to expend energy on finding out personally.

I know Oahu isn't very gun friendly, but I wouldn't be surprised if it's just another ruse to generate income, much like the state vehicle safety check, which is just criminal.

Concur, on both accounts. And strangely, there are criminals who get away not doing either!

New York still sucks. I paid $300+ and have been waiting for months just for a permit to purchase, own, and fire a handgun at the range---not a carry. Current wait for a 'target' permit is 13+ months. Still waiting.

Edit: In Nassau County (Long Island) you can't even apply for a full/unrestricted carry. The option isn't on the application. You need to rub elbows with the police commish...

holy crap, that sucks, and that is why I am glad I never went to NY for a duty station.

Are you stationed in NY?

No, I was born and raised in NY. I had a PA carry for five years before it expired, and I currently have a VA CCW. Both the PA and VA permits were inexpensive and very easy to obtain. New York required a TON of documentation. I'd rather do two SF-86s. Maybe three.

I had to list previous addresses and employers for the last 5-10 years, obtain four notarized character references, provide a notarized explanation of my military service, motor vehicle driving record, fingerprints, two passport photos, utility/tax bills, NYS drivers license, and apply for a mental health background search. I'm sure there are a few other items. ALL FOR A HOME/TARGET PERMIT. It's a slap in the face of the Second Amendment.

And to purchase a handgun you need to go to police headquarters, buy a purchase document ($10), buy your gun, and take it directly to police HQ for inspection/registration.
