FY19 STA-21

abigail vytlas

OCS SNFO/AMDO
I'm alternate for the second year in a row for NFO, disappointing as this my fourth time overall applying. But hey the guy that got the NFO spot had a better package, it makes sense. Better luck next year, I know where I need to tweak and fix things.

Having been in the STA-21 circus myself, I’ll tell all of you what my skipper told me after my first year as a non-select. “Stop wasting time with a shot in the dark shell of a program. Spend your energy/time completing your degree and apply for OCS.” I applied for 7 different commissioning programs including STA-21, Flying Warrant, and LDO. No, I did not give up on any option-I applied for STA-21 until I was ineligible for all options age/medical. Bottom line, I went all in:
-got off active duty
-went SELRES
-sold EVERYTHING to get out of debt
-went to school full time to complete my degree.
-continued to apply for LDO-SELRES.
-applied for DCO one week after completing my degree and was selected my first look. I’ve been on steady active orders since commissioning and currently on an active recall filling an O3 billet as a butter bar-I have a package in for FTS conversion right now and will likely pick it up within the next year.
I’m not tooting my own horn, just trying to convey that you have to look outside the box to achieve your goals. Don’t be scope locked on the most competitive commissioning sources. OCS selection rates are way better than STA-21/LDO for some designators. How bad do you really want it? Trust me, getting one more SOQ award and EP Eval is not really setting you apart from the crowd. I had 2 SOY and 6 SOQ awards along with a CAP and EP evals-didn’t put me over the top until I had a degree.

Disclaimer: if you are a nuke, none of this applies because the STA-21 program is nothing more than a glorified NUKE commissioning source.

-cheers
