I am a core select. I go to a non-nuke school. They won't necessarily FORCE you to be a nuke, but you will have to go through service assignment. Service assignment typically comes back nuke if you are qualified for the job.

If you're a non-technical major with marginal Calculus and Physics grades you don't have anything to worry about.

If you're the opposite, be prepared. I've witnessed a lot of MIDN getting selected nuke against their will because of good grades and a technical degree. You can always turn it down, however, if you TRULY don't want to go.

I wouldn't worry about it too much. You'll be fine either way. Good luck!

Thanks for the great reply bryson! I have As andBs in calc physics, engineering math, organic chemistry and other technical courses. I actually qualified for nuke coming in, and am my current rating due to some recruiting mishaps. im quickly warming up to the idea of being a sub nuke, though.

It's an amazing opportunity all around. It's all what you make of it. Being an officer is exciting, no matter the designator.

Good luck in your application!

That's great information. How about other career fields? I'm under the impression that core selects are competing for assignments with ROTC guys, but do they treat the core-selects differently? Or is it still based of performance?

It's the same criteria for a MIDN.

IE: Tier of Major, GPA, FITREPS, PRT Scores, etc...

Basically, you are a MIDN for admin purposes. You will compete based on class rank just like the MIDN. You are not treated any different.

How soon does the TRIAD get informed of selection? Do they just watch the NAVADMIN like we would, or does NSTC inform them prior to?

@cbk412 This may have changed, but in FY14 and FY15 my command did not receive word prior to the NAVADMIN being released.

My XO confirmed that this morning when I was drilling EPCC. I'll 99% most likely find out before anyone else, then. Anyways, in others news can anyone still access their home page for STA-21? You can still log-on and check if you go to netfocus.netc.navy.mil/STA21/STA21Home.aspx after doing an initial log-in to netfocus. Mine still says updated 06sep

I can log in but I don't have that STA 21 tab. I only have the NROTC tab. It's been gone for awhile anyways.
