FY18 STA-21 Applicants

Zachary Wagoner

FY-17 Nuclear Selectee
If anyone can help me out, my package is almost complete (all documents together) except my interviews which will be set up and finished by next week.

Do I have the appraisal forms for the officers interviewing me and hand it over before the interview? I'm on a base with a very limited option of officers O-4 and above which has been a very frustrating issue.

How about letters of recommendations? I wont have any besides the CO's. Does anyone see this as a problem?

I also have a huge amount of volunteer hours. How does one go about adding this to my package? I help a the local farm assisting elderly and less fortunate people.

My package is pretty strong but very limited on recommendations.
I had zero recommendations. A lot of people didn't have any. I think volunteer service is a big deal because many of FY17 selects have volunteer service ribbons. I didn't. Honestly, looking at my package and the variety of other selects we had, it really does seem like a crap shoot so just make yourself look the best you can and then cross your fingers.

I would say recommendations are helpful depending on the program you are applying for. When only one or two pilots are selected, I'm sure it helps the board decide. But with Nuclear getting more than half of the selections LORs aren't as handy. If you have a lot of volunteer hours, I would try and put yourself in to receive the ribbon. For appraisal sheets, I always sent the officers a few days prior to the board convening the sheet and a copy of my whole package so they can get a gist of who I am prior. Good luck! I'm about done too just need my boards done as well.

I'm going over my whole package and the sta-21 website right now before I meet with my CO and I have a few question to people that have gotten selected. This is my third year, and I'm thinking is less more or is more less? Should I really put in all my exam profile sheets? Every LOA that I've received? Maybe write a list of things you've included. I can't screw anything up this year so any advice helps.

I suppose it would depend on how good your exam profiles looked. On a side not, I am afraid of going for Pilot since I am 27 right now and I don't think I will be able to commission before I turn 29. Even with my 85+ hours on my record. Do they stick hard to those limits even when you are within your 36 months?

This depends entirely on how much school you need to finish, though your age will probably be taken into consideration with the rest of your package.

I know they do for SWO/ED. I had to write in my personal statement and have my CO write that I would be able to graduate before I hit the age cutoff. I will have to complete my degree before I turn 35, which gives me 28 not 36 months. I would call the number on the NAVADMIN and ask the individuals processing the applications for the board. They may be able to let you know if it is waiverable and who to contact to get that waiver.

Mine is not yet completed. I am just waiting on interview dates to be finalized.....hopefully done by the 16th.

Has anyone seen the Qualified vs. Selected stats by option for the last two years? I saw a spreadsheet for FY-13/14/15 and was just curious.

I decided not to apply this year, I'm taking the time to make progress on my degree and make myself a lot more presentable. It looks promising this year if you're going for NFO or pilot, good luck to all of you who did apply!

Completed and mailed...........good luck everyone!

I have a newfound respect for everyone who completes one of these packages, regardless of the outcome.
