Flight Pay Changes

The AF seems to have figured out a better way of taking care of their people, even with Congressional constraints.
I've been saying that since 2012/13 when I saw my USAF friends getting paid 100k to get out of their contracts EARLY with a CJO from a major, while the Navy sent those of us non-TACAIR to the boat for less than a full tour because we'd quit long before they'd have to worry about paying us a severance. But fuck that waste of money, we have bodies who can fill SWO billets...

NOTHING official from the Army, but based on how F-d up our bonus program was, I'm sure the Army is striving to exceed their ignorance level. I'm guessing the Army will find a way to decrease our flight pay.

Thanks for posting, that brief is interesting. I don't agree with all their points or conclusions, but it's a decent acknowledgment of the problem, and the reasons behind it. Absolutely nothing in there about elimination of staff and ship's company jobs to address manning shortfalls and aid retention, but that's probably out-of-scope for a brief on aviation incentive pay.

So they could pay a mid career LT $800 a month, but will purposely stick with $650 (the old rate), so they can give DHs more money? And they think that will *help* retention?

But those aren’t the folks they most need to retain. VFA/VAQ 1310s rarely do ships company or staff tours prior to DH. Also worth noting that nowhere in the document does it talk about reducing non due course flight pay from current levels.

I don't think an extra $5-10k a year, which is what folks look like they would get from the rejiggered Flight Pay and bonus money from the presentation EODDave posted, is going to move the needle retention-wise much at all. Good luck PERS, I think you are going to need it.

*whispers* try harder, bro.
I expected my post to trigger some NFO’s. What are the retention stats for NFO’s vs pilots in each community? Aren’t bonuses already a lot less for NFO’s? If they are willing to split who gets this increase in flight pay, why would it be different than the bonuses?

I think you're looking at this too narrowly. This, from what I understand, is just one of many tools they're using to address retention. Let's also be clear - PERS can only do so much, so they're doing what they can within the budgetary constraints that are beyond their control.

I think that mindset helps explain this approach.

You should ask my JOs how emotional I am, as a matter of habit. :)
