Flight Attrite to Navy Reservist

H20man

Drill baby drill!
It has been a long time since I have posted so I figured I would throw in a little back story first.

After making it through primary with no problems, and making it through the majority of intermediate I popped under the three failure policy in November. Final decision made in January to attrite me. Went to the March redesignation board. Three choices were 1. IW 2. Intel and 3. SWO. All desiring to stay on active duty. Results came back with my first choice, but as SELRES which was a shock as I had no plans on leaving the Navy. The majority of people I know that went to that board were given their first choice as well, but also as SELRES.

I don't know how it is at other commands but if other people find themselves in this situation, be proactive. Call the community managers and the detailers, get your name out there. If you end up SELRES call the contact on the redesignation letter asap, and get a hold of people at the career transition office, otherwise you'll find yourself nearing separation without any idea where to go or what needs to be done. Get the ball rolling on finding out when you can get into your new community's classes. For myself, I called around and was able to get the last class opening for the fiscal year and am being kept on active duty at least until the class is over. It works out well as I do not have to worry about moving or having to come back for the class after being separated, other people I know are being separated and will have to have theirs done at another time. Try to gather as many avenues as possible as no one really knew what to do with me at first.

As affiliating with a reserve unit and finding a job I am behind the power curve as I cannot affiliate until I know where I am going to be living. Recently a few doors have been opened for me and there is a slim chance I might get to stay active duty, but until that materializes I am still acting as if I am being separated after the course.

It still sucks being in this situation as at this time I did not want to be outside looking in while friends continue on. It's also frustrating seeing the results of previous boards and people who DOR'd remaining on active duty with their first choice, but timing is everything with the Navy.

Sorry to hear about the recent troubles. Good Luck to you and your future!

I don't think I can PM you yet. Could you PM me and give me an idea as to what I have to look forward to in the way the classes are structured?

And if you failed three times in three different blocks, it didn't matter that they were separate?

I was just selected for SNA by the Navy in the April board, so I have a while to go before I'm even in flight school, but I would really like to understand how the grading structure works.

Could you lay that out to me (in a pm)?
Thanks for your time,

He was in the NFO pipeline, grading there won't be applicable to you in the the SNA VTs per se.

I am sorry to hear about your experience. I attrited from advanced in 2006, and became an intel officer. I don't know a ton about the reserves, but would going SELRES give you the chance to pick up a FTS billet if there was one that interested you? FTS looks like active duty-lite and might give you a chance to get a paycheck and get some good experience. Or would you be able to go IA right away? A deployment might let you defer the where-should-I -live question for a while longer. Either way, good luck to you.

I know this post is old but I’m going in front of a pocr board and very interested in SELRES Intel. Would love to hear about your experience if possible! Thank you so much
