Thank you. I am eager to meet people and make friends. Should be a good time. I contemplated driving, but when they said my car and belongings could be shipped to me later after OCS the decision became easy for me.
I also didn't want to deal with the winter conditions in New England, even though I am familiar with driving snow, and I will be able to work at my civilian job longer. I am not prior-enlisted nor do I have anyone in my immediate family in any branch of the military, so I am not 100% on all the military shorthand that is used so often on here. Guess I am going to learn soon. Exciting stuff.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but your car will not be shipped to you unless you are being stationed overseas. All PCS (change of station) orders that are CONUS (in the cont 48 states) will require you to drive your car or pay for it to be shipped on your own dime. You can however have them ship your household to you.

Yep. That would be bad news (facepalm) :-(. Both my recruiter (a Chief) and the Lt. who swore me in said personal belongings AND the car could be shipped to me. But now that I think about it, they never specified about who was paying for that. It would also be my fault for not inquiring more. Guess that just serves as a lesson.
As long as the household can be shipped I am still a happy-camper. Not the car though? Wonder what it costs to do that. Damn. Guess that means I might make a trip right after OCS back to SoCal to grab the car and do a little XC driving. It's going to be around May so the weather should be nice coming back. How long does an SNA normally get between OCS and when I have to report to my next duty station?
Generally you will get 1 day per 350 miles and they will let you go back to CA to get your car and drive it to PCOLA. Last time I checked shipping a car cross country was about 2k or more. The drive should only take you 3-4 days. I drove from Lemoore, CA to New Orleans in 4 days with a packed car, 3 dogs and a cat. Get with me when we all arrive and I can go over all the travel stuff I was a prior Personnel Specialist and I have been working for the Navy as a Civ doing the same type of stuff just at a higher echelon.
Im not sure how long we will have from OSC to PCOLA for SNA. It depends on how they do the orders. Normally it is about 2 weeks or so.

We had four travel days as of July. Any more than that and you'll have to take leave. I took the four days plus about a week of leave. I'll double check my NLT date on my orders when I get home, might give you an idea of how much leave you can actually take between OCS and Pcola.
EDIT: Just reread it and realized that travel days may differ depending on where you're coming from. I happened to live in the New England-ish area, so I'm not sure if my four days was from my house or from Newport.

Yeah I would assume so, at least for non-priors. Not sure how it works for priors, though, especially for SNA. They'd come from their current duty station, have temporary duty at Newport, and then get an i-stop at Pensacola before their ultimate? Maybe?
But outside of the number of travel days, there'll also be a certain amount of time that you'd be able to take leave before checking in, like I mentioned. If you check in within the number of travel days, you don't get charged any leave days. Of course, if you check in early, you don't get the full per diem, so if you're not taking leave, check in on the last travel day after 1600.

Monday morning will kick off the studying party. I've been getting in good PT, surviving holiday/leave food. Monday will also be the end of bad food. No matter what I expect life to suck in February, but I will be ready as possible.
