NAVSTA to Smokey Point is about 10 miles. Also an awesome outdoor rec center at Smokey Point.
Carrier is berthed so that all you do is have the tugs pull you away from the pier, engage shafts, hang a 180 at the tip of Whidbey Island, and 4 hours later you're in open ocean, IIRC.
The whole Everett Home Port location was brought about as a direct result of Senator "Scoop" Jackson's personal input. The 'Home Port' SHOULD have been placed in Port Angeles, WA (one man's opinion) for a variety of reasons. i.e., @ 2 hours or less to the PAC and the need for local jobs, but Scoop intervened and had been lobbying long & hard on behalf of Everett (his home town and WA residence) and the end result is history ... Scoop died in '83 and Everett was final-selected in '84. Kinda' like Sonny Montgomery and Meridian if you want to wonder about the "why's" ... :)

Everett was almost closed in the '94 BRAC go-'round ... even though it was relatively new ... Alameda was closed instead.

The satellite Smokey Point site came about as a result of a land-deal scandal perpetrated by a CAPT and two CDR's who had a financial interest in the location ... they received letters of reprimand and were retired in the fallout from the land-scam. After some time spent in the courts scratching through various land condemnations and suits/counter suits over the developed "value" of the land ... the NEX, Commissary and BOQ were built. They should have been co-located w/the Home Port where it makes more sense and the land is/was available ... :)

Bremerton usually houses ships in mothballs or those undergoing significant maint/rehab ... perhaps THAT's why Bremerton is not front & center w/assignments for new Black Shoe Officers ... ???

Currently home-ported ships in Everett (I think this is current and it's public domain):

From what I remember, there were only 5-10 Everett slots on the board the past couple of years, and they go fast, usually right after Pearl Harbor.

Really? Now that is very discouraging. Unfortunately my grades have been terrible and I'm part of the "comma club". Everyone so far has eagerly wanted Mayport and San Diego. There were also a lot of mention of Japan. I only know of one who wanted Everett because he lives in the area.

~~

I have looked at the ships' info online but I was hoping someone had personal experience on one of them. For some reason, there are no officers here that have been stationed there.

O.K. ... his locale said "Illinois" and that's as far as I went ... he had me fooled. :)

I can live w/my humiliation.

rather, "She had me fooled" :icon_wink
And yes I meant there are no officers at USNA that have been to Everett, that I know of anyways.

Well the ranking came out today.

Thank you everyone for your advice. I am now assigned to a destroyer in Norfolk. Everett surprisingly was the first port to go, even before Japan and Pearl Harbor.

Not too surprising ... quality of life and overall cost. :)

Tru. Everett itself is alright, but the surrounding area is awesome. If any of you like BBQ, I highly suggest you make a run down to Bellevue and stop by Dixie's to "Meet the Man." Also, there's an actual drive in theater in Everett which is a lot of fun during the summer.

For some awesome bbq ribs and brews one could always head on down to Mt. Vernon and hit up the Skagit Brewery.

True, true . . . though that would be "up," not "down." :D

And if I was in Everett, I would head down to Seattle and get some Red Menace from Hale's Ales. God, I miss a good PacNW Amber Ale already . . .

Oops, you're right. Also good is Epanema Brazilian grill (rodisio) in SEA but it will set you back a few $$$. There is some really f@#king good Pho in the Everett/Lynwood area if that is your thing.

It snowed here on Thursday and almost everything shut down.

Also, I was on Whidbey Island this weekend and finally realized how small Oak Harbor is.
