Good article in today's Foreign Affairs about the success of recruiting to Finland's Armed Forces.

Seems to me that it is just partly government wisdom, the other half (at least) is originated by Finns' special national virtue called "sisu". No close analogue in their neighborhood states, if any. Sisu is akin to voluntary willingness to considering no things as unimportant details - everything is important and should be treated properly, which in turn takes time. Sisu makes the general Western "quick or dead" behaviour irrelevant in Finland: oppositely, you'll be dead being too quick. The Finns' self-respect is based on it. Tactical speed might be as high as possible - after all, the F1 races as well as an ice hockey and skiing all contains the famous Finnish names in their respective histories, but strategically all Finns are slow thinkers, who prefer to stick with the proven wisdoms of their lifestyle.

The new movie hits the cinemas in Russia, "The Crimea" -
A lovestory at the background of the Crimea invasion of 2014. A cheap trick to tease the Russian national identity. Funny enough, the film is issued at the very moment when the other movie, "Matilda"
about the last Russian Tsar Nicolas II's love affair is trying to get the people's attention strongly against pro-government movement aimed to discredit and even forbid this ancient story. A propaganda bells general quarters.

Polls are predicting a REMAIN victory but 5 districts have just reported: Newcastle was much closer than expected (was expected to go REMAIN) and Sunderland went big for LEAVE. The pound has started to drop. Will be long night watching the BBC....

Currently reporting turnout is very heavy (70%), especially in the de-industrialized areas home to many in the working class (think Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania). Looks like it is Scotland & London vs the remainder of England...

As Scotland is heavily REMAIN, if the UK votes to leave the EU, then Scotland will try again to break away from England.

Today was supposed to be BREXIT day - no one knows if has been delayed or cancelled but it has been fascinating to watch the BBC. I keep waiting for John Bercow (Speaker of the House of Commons) to say "I didn't get a harumph out of that guy..."

Bercow is a lot more entertaining than CSPAN....

Another vote today with the same result. One of member from Scotland certainly sounded like there might be a vote for Scottish Independence if there is a hard BREXIT, another member resigned from the Conservative Party on the House of Commons floor after the vote.

A good read from Foreign Policy...
Britain’s Crisis Isn’t Constitutional. It’s Political.
A Remain Parliament is confronting a Brexit electorate—and none of the solutions on offer is likely to resolve the stalemate anytime soon.

The shorter version is here.

I disdain those who advocated for Brexit but quit before the war was done, at least they have shown their true colors to their fellow Brits and the world.

The 21st Century Fulda Gap? The Suwalki Gap where Poland is the 64 mile wide NATO bridge to the Baltics - with Russian Kalingrad on one side and Belarus on the other has been in the news lately.

While everyone is watching Ukraine, keep an eye out for Belarus and the Suwalki Gap which connects Poland to Lithuania.

Are you suggesting that Belarus is going to take military action against a NATO member nation?

It depends on what "military action" means nowadays. The attacks of Polish and Lithuanian borderlines by directed crowds of deliberately delivered there Arabs have already took place.

That’s the part that makes me scratch my head when people talk about this. Regardless of one’s opinion on Russia-Ukraine, it baffles me that folks think there’d be action against a NATO state. Article 5 basically directs WW3 at that point. I don’t think even Putin is that dumb.

I dont think article 5 requires actual kinetic battle. Something like "come to the defense " of member nations . I believe it was a couple years ago that Brett expressed doubt America would go to war over a small Baltic member nation. That might be true if a response short of bombs and bullets can be credibly passed of as coming to the defense of another NATO member. We saw it in the NATO response in Afghanistan by some nations.
