Disqualified for a disease I do not have

Hey all,

I was having some issues getting MEPS to see me for a physical, so my recruiter submitted my records directly to N3M. He got back to me with the news that I was disqualified for eosinophilic esophagitis (EE). I went back to my medical history and looked through my documents, and had a biopsy that notes mild eosinophilic inflammation. I'm not a doctor, but I could not find EE noted anywhere.

I have spoken to three physicians, all of whom say that the diagnosis for EE is absolutely not the same thing as eosinophilic inflammation. The diagnostic criteria is dramatically different. I've even had a gastrointestinal physician review my charts and he says the same thing: I do not have EE. I've spoken to my recruiter and he said he will try to get in touch with N3M for clarification.

Has anyone had anything like this happen before?

Yes, I have had a similar situation with MEPS. I was disqualified for dyplastic nevi, but had a dermatologist give a second opinion. She wrote a letter with another opinion of a former Navy Flight Surgeon (lucky on my part that she had that connection) that was put into my package. This package was submitted back to MEPS/Navy Medical and a general waiver was granted agreeing with both of their assessments that I did not have dysplastic nevi.

My advice is to get a second opinion or a third opinion and get paperwork documenting it in the likely event N3M comes back with you are disqualified. This documentation can then be submitted and you will hopefully get the result you are looking for.
