Depth perception mega thread

I think it was said way back when (I'd have to find it, but I'm sure mention of it will make it resurface) that if you fail the depth perception, that they will pull out the glasses and book test and give that to you. I know I can pass the latter, it's easy (I don't know why they don't use that to begin with anyway)

haven't seen that one, I looked into it a little after MEPS and found a couple opthalmologists who gave the Titmus test (the one with the fly), but they both said they didn't have the other three tests which the Navy accepted because they were too expensive to purchase. Anyways, it seems like we are all able to pass one of the tests, do you guys know how common it is for someone to DQ because of this? All of the opthalmologists said that a lack of depth perception is fairly uncommon and is usually associated to someones inability to do a certain test, and also that they could usually see other signs such as lazy eye. But then again they don't hold patients to the NOMI standards.

Flight Physical & Depth Perception

I have recently been accepted into OCS as a pilot. I am a little concerned about my depth perception though. I passed the MEPS test obviously but I don't think I did by much. I was told that I will take the flight physical just prior to beginning OCS. Does anyone know if the standards are a lot higher for depth perception on this test than at MEPS? I assume they wouldn't have accepted me if my scores weren't acceptable to pass the flight test. Is this right, or do they accept people knowing that they won't pass, and then try to convince them to change from pilot to something else? Also, is there any way I can take the test earlier to see if I can pass. I will graduate in June with an aeronautical engineering degree and would want to find a job in this field if I cannot fly.

OK, I have no idea about the depth perception test, but I doubt they would accept you if you didn't have a shot. I think lots of people have trouble passing it at MEPS and go to a civilian doctor to take it instead. I don't believe you can take the flight physical early, you just have to take a shot and hope you pass. Anyway, I checked out your resume, holy ****, nice GPA!!! When did you get accepted.......there have been lots of rejections around here lately and I'm surprised I'm the first one to ask. Anyway, I'm not really any help, just curious when you were accepted [:p]

I was sort of tardy in getting my application in but it got sent in the second week of September and I found out I was accepted three weeks ago.

OK, so the next thing everyone is going to want to know is...what were your stats (test scores, letters of rec, PRT scores, flight time, major, GPA, any "blemishes" you have on record). Pretty much everything the Navy knows about you, they want to know too

I know some stuff is on your resume, but most people won't look at that and will just ask anyway [:D]

Since I didn't help you at all on your question I found this previous one:

"Skyhigh, depth perception is one of the biggest problems at MEPS, or I should say *THE* biggest problem. I failed it at MEPS, as did 2 other people I know. They made me go to a civilian and take a different depth perception test - which I passed with no problems. In fact, the people at NRD Phoenix had forms ready for applicants who failed the circles at MEPS - this tells me that people fail that damned test all the time.

Pap, who is out of OCS and is a SNA now, said that if you fail the "circle" depth perception test at OCS, they give you a bunch of different tests - so no worries. ...I heard the same information from other people as well.

Jack"

Thanks for the info.....
Lets see as far as my scores go. I got an 8/9 on the qualifying test they gave me. My PRT scores kinda sucked cause I really didn't start training for it until a few weeks before but they were 62 pu, 72 su, and the run in 10:10. GPA is 3.96 in aerospace engineering. My letters of rec were from professors at my school primarily. One was a former Air Force test pilot. I have just over 400 hours of flight time and have instructed for about 8 months now. I also work on our schools F-4 flight sim....i don't know if that helped or not. Record is clean too.

Man, i didn't realize that so many people were getting turned away. My recruiter basically told me i had no chance of getting rejected so i didn't really worry about it. She said that previous flight time and GPA were the most important things they look at. Oh well, i guess it saved me some unneeded stress.

like somebody said on another post somewhere, buy one of those magic eye books and look at it to improve your depth perception. i've heard that some optometetrists actually use those in vision therapy programs to help people learn how to use both eyes to work together. i bought one and the images seem very similar to something you'd get in a depth perception test.

by the way, how is the visual acuity test during the flight physical? personally, i had a hell of a time looking into that box at MEPS and barely passed with 20/40 in one of my eyes. i know from civilian eye doctors and my own eye chart that i can see 20/25-20/30 so was the MEPS test just screwed up like everything else? anybody have similar experiences or is it just me? what about missing a letter or 2 on the 20/40 line but meeting the refractive errors imits?
is there any leeway given for a situation like this or not? thanks.

dhefeman - I am in my 12th week of OCS right now and I had the same scare at MEPS that you did. When I got here the NOMI exam was of great concern. Although the eye exam is no joke here (I had three shipmates that had to redesignate), you should not have too much of a problem passing the depth perception test. At MEPS I completely guessed on several of the last little dots, they let me by anyway. Well at NOMI I had to guess on everyone of the stupid circles and failed terribly. There was a back up test though and the things poped out and I passed easliy. You should have no problem.

Hey did any of those guys have to redesignate because of depth perception? What were the reasons? Congrats on the 12th week.

Jim-
I think it's 20/40 -0 on the vision. Some of those eye exercises to improve visual acuity couldn't hurt and would probably ease your mind a bit. Where did you get the magic eye book?

i got the magic eye book at barnes and noble in the puzzles and games section. it has an orange cover and says something like "a collection of 88 images". i'm sure you'd be to get it from their website too. try this link:
