Correspondence Course Review

I was at the IRR muster in Norfolk Sep 8/9. Someone asked about the reduction in correspondence courses and NRTC courses going to NEL behind a CAC firewall. PERS-93 said that correspondence courses will eventually be going away. They didn’t specify when exactly.

Looks like the NRTC honey hole is going away. It's too bad as it feels very deliberate against IRR types, which is frustrating. As I remember, when I attended taps class and heard other briefs required on check out, we were encouraged to join the reserves and the IRR. Seems very disingenuous now.

I think this is the Navy playing chess. The need for folks to join/affiliate (either active or SELRES) calls for new strategies to make recruiting mission. Drying up the well for correspondence courses places an IRR member in a tight position to achieve retirement. Almost "forces" you into SELRES if the member really wants to reach the finish line.

It's a strategy against the IRR-ASP folks. It's been a long time coming.

Yup. Circa 2004, we weren't going to be "reservists". We were going to be "re-serve-ists." There was the push to remove the R from USNR and everyone would just be USN.

Email sent by Don Squibb on 9/21 states that "If you are IRR, please contact NPC Customer Service at 1-866-827-5672 or 800-535-2699 for access" for the new E-Learning site. Has anyone had success or problems doing this?

No luck, when I spoke with the IRR Counselor they can’t give us access.

It's only deliberate against the IRR-ASP, which numbers close to 50,000 people (see my other thread).

If I had the option of dropping to the IRR-ASP and finishing out my last four by doing nothing but courses to meet the annual point requirement, I would jump on it in a heartbeat.

Has anyone been able to access the DCAA courses?

If so, do you have a link to the site registry? And how have you found the courses to be?

Thanks!

If anyone out there thinks Marinenet is only for Marines or requires a proctor for all courses...not true. It's open, NON-CAC, and only certain courses require a Proctor. There are some "Whale" courses available too. The foreign language courses are high point values, do not require a proctor, but do require effort...you actually have to learn the material. The material is not overly difficult. No Charity here, but if you're up to the challenge the point values are commensurate.

Can anyone confirm that the MarineNet courses are approved for 1315 (pilot) designators? Thx in advance! Asking for a buddy :)

There shouldn't be a problem with those. I did a couple foreign language courses on JKO (Joint KNowledge Online) and PERs accepted them no problem. THat was back in 2016 though.

I'll keep talking to myself in this thread. I called IRR counselor this afternoon to confirm my point capture for last year as my anniversary date is December 30th. I was told that my point capture for the previous year won't be available for approximately 6-9 months. I told them I would be hitting my 20 years of service mark in 6 months and applying for retirement before that. I was then told to check back in 4 months and if those points weren't in my record yet they would open a ticket on the matter, but until then to be patient. In the meantime I'll finish my last correspondence course and apply for retirement...so...uhmmmmm...yeah.

Good luck, Sam! Keep fighting the good fight.

I'm officially separated without being able to retire. The short version is because they didn't process my courses in a timely fashion, I was repeatedly turned down by the Continuation Board. Que será, será.

Sam—good luck and keep us appraised of how it goes!

Duncan-bummer! Can you tell us what happened? Is it worth going to the BCNR? Although I went there and tried to get two bad years turned over and got turned down, it might be worth a shot.
