There is no conversation that is not improved with Life of Brian references. Blessed are the cheese makers.

Theranos sounds like a Bond villain.
Elizabeth Holmes does seem like she could fit the role. Except her testing equipment would have to do something sneaky and nefarious instead of doing fuck-all.

Mattis has enough fans in the Senate, both parties are saying the votes are there. Kirsten Gillibrand is the only senator who's saying they won't vote for him, and even in her case she's saying it's on principle (i.e., a recently-retired general as SecDef) rather than about him personally.

Horribly thought-out editorial from the Chicago Tribune. "Civilian control of the military" is supposed to prevent someone from being to instigate a military coup, not bar retired GOFOs from participating in government indefinitely.

The other thing no one is mentioning is that George Marshall, previous waiveree, was promoted to five-star during WWII. Generals of the Army/AF and Fleet Admirals didn't retire. They stayed on active duty receiving full pay and benefits until they died. They just had no billet. So part of the problem that existed for Marshall that does not exist for Mattis is the prospect of having an active-duty commissioned officer serve as SECDEF.

Yes, Ike was also a five-star. He resigned his commission to accept the Presidency, and JFK reappointed him to the active duty list afterwards.
