The admission board has resources that rank the competitiveness of high schools. Don't worry too much about your rank if you are in a truly competitive college prep type of high school, are taking the most challenging courses, and receiving good grades.

You don't apply for NAPS. The admissions board makes the offer based on your USNA application. It is usually someone who they think has very good potential as a mid and officer but is lacking in academics only. A NAPS offer is really quite complementary. It says your officer potential is high enough they are willing to make the extra investment in one more year of school just to make sure you succeed academicly.

Last year 96% of people went off to college after graduation. Found out that 40% of last years graduating class has a 3.5 GPA or above, and I am supposed to get in the top 20%!? I hate my school...:icon_rage

With all of that grade inflation are you sure you aren't in the Navy already?

Your guidance counselor's send out that information to USNA and colleges. They see that your school is competitive. That will help you out.

But the real answer is: work harder.

It isn't always just grades.

I know. You should tell that to our school. Some kid killed himself a couple years ago cuz he got a b+... I do 3 sports and scouts which chews up a lot of time to do homework and sleep:eek:

There was a recruiter for the us marine corps at our school yesterday [he was a e-6. I didn't know the recruiters move that high up the ranks] and I knew more about the Academy than he did...

A common theme you'll find on this site is that if you want an officer program talk to officer recruiters. The best source of academy info is the academy (web site, admissions and such), bgo's and grads.

I fixed it for you. It's my pet peeve - but Marine Corps, Navy, Army, Air Force and Coast Guard are all proper nouns and are therefore capitalized.

A SSgt in the Marine Corps who is a recruiter won't know much about the Naval Academy. It's not really his mission to recruit officers and/or officer candidates. And yes, it's not uncommon for recruiters to be SSgt's. They generally don't head off to recruiting duty (a B billet) until they're on their second tour and are a Sgt. Sgt is just about the lowest rank you'll see as a recruiter, and you'll see all ranks above that.

Ask me about ninjas!
phrogpilot was brigade drill officer?!?!?? That explains so much...

Of course, I'm one to talk, seeing as how I was one of the 'drill nazis' myself.

edit: And yes, no standing in formation, attending musters, standing inspections, marching, etc. was a factor in me seeking out the drill officer position.

JTB7, from my experience, having leadership positions is a huge factor. I didn't graduate with an over stellar GPA but being an Eagle and a three time lettermen (not even having to be a capt) will get you a very good shot. Keep it up. Talk to your local American Legion post to see if you can get into Boys State, another "leadership laboratory." I spent most of my congressional nomination panel interview talking about scouts and boys state, nothing about grades or athletics. Showing that you can successfully juggle GPA, athletics, and leadership is a huge plus. That will make you look like a well rounded applicant who knows how to manage time. Time management is a critical skill at any college, but it is highlighted at the academy. Don't forget to apply for Summer Seminar (http://www.usna.edu/Admissions/nass.htm). A great program that will let you see if you actually like the idealized version of the place.
They call it scaminar for a reason, but it will give you a small taste. That's my staple advice, i hope it helps. If you have any questions, send me a PM.

I said it before, and I'll say it again. Grades don't matter as much as you think. I got accepted, and graduated from USNA with a HS GPA of 1.96...

How the hell did you get in with a 1.96 GPA? I I had less than a 2.0, I couldn't play sports. You can't get in to a state college in CA if you have less than a 2.0, let alone the Academy...

Drill Nazis unite!!!... (was Co. Drill Sgt for a semester... until a certain situation bit me in the arse...)

@JTB7: I went to NAPS with a guy (he quit USNA) and there was another in the class behind me (grduated and a Rhodes Scholar I think), neither of which even graduated HS.
