During indoc you most likely won't be able to access them. During OC your class can (and should) request a chit to allow people to go start their cars. During candio, barring some outrageous punishment, you should have no problem accessing them. As always, each class is different, but just ask the staff when you get a chance.

If your car is old (like mine), don’t bother driving cross country to Newport. You’ll have a bad time.

If that’s the case, you’re better having your OR provide you with an airline ticket for the day or 2 before class-up.

I am most likely going to be on the November 3rd class per my recruiter. Any idea how long before report date finsel letter usually comes in?

Breathing some life into this sticky to see what has changed in the almost 4 years. Is the jury still out on whether it's better to fly to OCS than to drive? Or have there been changes that make having your POV easier (such as being able to start the engine more often)?

When I was there last year they seemed pretty good about letting people go to start their cars every week or two after the first three weeks. You aren't going to be able to go anywhere with it though until the very last week in super-candio phase when you get off-base liberty.

Nowadays with remote start, you could start it hourly.

Greetings from OCS stand down.

So, I believe this may be dependent on the OCS director but for those of us on stand down, we are NOT allowed to use our vehicles unless we're on leave. In other words, unless you live close to the area (no more than a 12hr drive), know you'll be assigned to stay in NS Newport, or simply have no place to store your car, you're better off leaving your car behind. Driving out here to just use your car during Senior CandiO phase is not worth it.

If you still decide to bring your vehicle, car starts are not guaranteed and it's up to your class team on how generous they want to be (our first car start was the weekend we finished Indoc Phase and we ended up getting car starts almost every weekend thereafter, but other classes weren't as fortunate).
