ASTB-E/APEX 4 Experience -DEC 2013

I think it was 40 or 45 minutes, but it ends the test once you've done enough questions for the computer to evaluate you (I would think, it just moved me on to reading automatically way before the time expired).

Thanks for writing this. It's been nearly a decade now since I took the thing, which is creepy in it's own rite, but it is cool to see that good info is still being pushed on this forum sometimes. As an aside, was the audio portion of the practical/performance part mixed with extraneous comm on the other ear? If so, I have to admit that they have done something actually creatively intelligent with this test. I can't even begin to count how many times I have nearly lost my mind trying to pay attention to one radio while 2 others are simultaneously also blowing up, let alone that asshole on guard who will start doing his comm check at that precise moment. It sounds like a really minor thing, but that is something that has always been hard for me. Maybe for the newest generation of aviators, they will find guys who can listen to infinite radios and tune the wrong ones out better :)

I recently took the new exam and scored a 52 on the OAR. Its not a great score but hopefully it will be good enough to get me into OCS as an Intel or IW officer. Almost all of my math questions were word problems. I didn't get any questions that involved logarithms; maybe I wasn't doing good enough on the math section to be asked those types of problems. About 85 percent of the math problems I got were word problems.

Not encouraging anyone to buy anything, but the performance based measures I took yesterday used this equipment:

http://www.amazon.com/Thrustmaster-Cougar-Joystick-Sturmovik-Software/dp/B00006LIO6/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1387638192&sr=8-2&keywords=throttle and joystick flightsimulator11

When you get to the part of the test where you have to track the 1d moving plane with the throttle and the 2d moving plane with the joystick, don't stress yourself out if you're not getting close, just try to mimic there movement and don't push either piece of equipment to an extreme. I felt like I wasn't close most of the time but I still managed decent AQR, PFAR and FOFAR scores at the end.
Thanks for that info Henry. Did your testing site use that exact Thruster / Joystick? Anyone else have a testing center use the same joystick?

It used either that exact model or one similar enough that I can't tell the difference. The only button I needed to use on the joystick was the trigger, though I had to use several buttons on the throttle during the 'warnings' section of the performance based measures.

As for the listening part of that section, once you focused on the ear the program told you to focus on it wasn't too hard. The letters and numbers are announced at the same time in each ear but they don't shoot by too fast to process what you just heard. I practiced a bit for that section by playing an audiobook in one ear and music in the other ear and focused on following the audiobook.

I am taking ASTB the new form in 2 days. I am hoping to do well and will post score results on this site later on. I have been studying the word problems from the old forms. For example: (how long to complete a task together, questions that deal with acid solutions, discount prices, questions involving traveling-average speed, Naval detachment rations, questions about field plowing machines, filling and empty rates of a water tank and so forth.) I was interested if the word problems were similar to the old test form questions or not? Or if you can give any suggestions about the type of word problems, that would be helpful. I am also trying to get into OCS for Intel. Congrats to you by the way.

I didn't take the previous version of the test but they seem similar to what other people have been saying. If you study the methods used to answer the problems in the ARCO book, it should help answer some of the questions. My mistake was not focusing my study time on those types of math problems, if I had I probably would of scored in the high 50s maybe even low 60s.

I took the ASTB OAR section today in a ROTC building located in Florida. I arrived early and excited. I had to wait on another test taker to arrive and then we could begin the test. We were both glad we came early because the apex 4 system was having several difficulties. So our supervisor was very glad we arrived 20 minutes early to sort out all the problems. The test began after we created a new account- know your SSN.

First subtest was math. I had prepared for mostly word problems but in fact there were very few on my test. There was an interest, average, monetary question. There was a question about knowing the conversion of a foot into a mile. There were a few questions about circles but I never saw any area or perimeter questions. I felt only slightly nervous about the math section since I am in no shape amazing in math.

The second subtest was reading which paragraphs were more military based questions. The test is adaptive- so I could tell when I got the previous question wrong because the question afterwards was typically shorter and less military topic based.

The third was Mechanical. Which felt was like the hardest test for me. I was scoring 100% on the practice tests and when the screen showed sample questions which I knew, I felt like this test should have been the easiest. But the questions were not from anything I had studied and it surprised me. There were no levers, no MA, no bouyancy, no electricty questions, no stroke engines, no tool knowledge. But there were questions about mass, velocity, water tanks fill how many houses on a hill, blowing on a piece of paper will make it go what direction, pendulums, rifle is shot and what happens to the bullet when it reaches a certain point, potential vs kinetic energy on a roller coaster....(These questions I felt like I answered correctly but am uncertain of how I actually did on them)
There were questions that I had which were not neccesarily HARD but I was unprepared for this section greatly. (I do not remember all the questions nor all the difficult questions, sorry) And I believe this is because the new test added in some new things which I had never thought to look at or to study since I had not seen them in my study aids. (online forums, youtube videos, petersons, barrons)

My overall score was a 43. Its low to be competitive. My recruiter told me it should be at least 48-50 to submit my packet. So I will wait for some new gouges, or other new study aids and probably will get a tutor while I am back at school. I think It worked against my advantage to study old form materials but thats my personal opinion on my test. Things I had focused on to be prepared for (3 + weeks of study) proved to be not on the test and a waste of time. The new test does have some new and different material from the old versions.

Background on me: Russian major/Criminology minor. I have not taken Algebra/Calculus in highschool nor college. I have not taken a physics course in college or highschool. (I wonder if having that knowledge would have helped) 3.3 current gpa and I will graduate in the summer of 2014. I do not consider myself a good test taker but I do not believe that I am a "below average" sitting duck with a score like 43. So I look forward to the retake and wont settle for this current score. My advice: Keep your mood up regardless of a weak score- you must learn to never give up and to try again.

Hope this was helpful- its very detailed and I apologize for its length.

@ Notorious Nate you stated "Know your Naval designations of aircraft, including before the tri-service designation system. There were two aircraft in that category that it asked questions about. " Did it say the prowler is another name for the EA-6 and ask you specific questionsabout that plane? How was it formatted is really what I am asking. Also did it show you a diagram of an aircraft carrier and ask you to point out specific features?

Any help is appreciated.

I am currently an Ensign at Nuclear Power School awaiting redesignation and will be taking it on 27 Jan. Thanks for the update. I took the old form in 2011 and prepared poorly for it and decided to have a "college night out" before the exam ultimately got what I deserved for scores(all 3's). Any more information you can convey on the math portion. I am using the Barron's and Aviation Selection Tests for Dummies booklet but don't want to be caught off guard with the math. Physics portion should be easy after going through power school before I was disenrolled.

Thanks again for the gouge.

The question should be to determine if you are familiar with the Aircraft Designation system. NAVEDTRA 14014 Chapter 2 page 17 has all the answers you seek. Suprisingly there are lots of other great Naval Avation gouge in this publication.

Maybe it should be required reading for all aviation wannabes.
