1971 was 5 rounds from a .38 revolver; 1 x .22 Hornet and 1 .410 shotshell from some USAF folding over-and-under two-barrel "survival rifle" that I don't think I ever saw again. Making 7 "boom sounds" constituted a "fam"…no one considered us "qualed" in anything.
I believe the M6 Aircrew Survival Weapon is to what you were referring?

Batt II was housed in "Splinterville" while the other Batt's were in the big brick buildings when I went through. The car in the photo dates me as older than dirt.

The M-1s were fully functional. But would start to rust in a heartbeat. We kept them in our personal locker, but never got to fire them.

Holy smokes! I Googled "Navy AOCS pics" and all sorts of nutty stuff popped up...including a pic that includes our Drill Instructor, Gunnery Sergeant Jones, United States Marine Corps (top and center with arms crossed). I believe the pic is from the 1985 to 1986 time frame. I graduated from AOCS Class 41-86.

Yup. from the left..

GYSGT Washington (Awesome Human Being), 2nd from the left looks like SSGT McQuig, SSGT Bowling(Used a megaphone during INDOC week due to losing his voice and smoking cigarettes during daily 3 mile 0530 runs) and the infamous GYSGT Crenshaw(loved Rum flavored gifts). MSGT Pflager in the middle to his right, GYSGT Goforth(Master of the Academic Rocks class 17-84) and the three sick individuals to his right appear to have been kicked out of The State Mental Hospital at Napa CA. Dear God, I just look at them 30 yrs later and the hair on the back of my neck is stiffening up and I'm uncomfortably more alert. The best of times as they say. Just don't mention the Black Hole behind the Batt. I hated the Black Hole and those panicked red ants. I think the ants sensed "fear" more than the humans. Little bastards!

Mike, thanks for the roll call regarding the DIs...I have heard all the names you listed from many of the guys I fly with at Delta. Bowling was still there when we were there and I believe one of the DIs on the right echelon is Gerhardt (sp?)...who we (Class 41-86) called "The Evil One"...I believe he is the third one up from the bottom. I remember the "Black Hole" quite well...that nasty, black, gritty, sand/dirt combo...luckily the red ants had been vacated by the time we had arrived...or maybe you guys had smashed them all.
