Another nail in the coffin of Old-School Naval Avaition..

I can say, from my experience here at NUW over the past year, that people are wearing squadron colors in flight suits both on base and out in town - as it should be. I have yet to witness anyone caring or otherwise having an issue with it.

Uniform regs only matter if you follow or care about them. When it was hot, we were authorized desert flight suits. Those are not, according to "the rules" allowed out in town. I ate in many a Waffle House in Milton and many a restaurant out on the road in my bag. Because I was hungry, and I wasn't going to change. Nobody said a damn thing to me, because nobody cared.

The three pages of wanking about this one item (colored shirts) is proof of the decline in machismo in our culture. Wear what you want, if it doesn't conform to the rules, be willing to accept the consequences. If you are truly worried about some fucking power hungry E-7 or a retired CMC who "is gonna tell your Skipper" you are doing it wrong.

If you are the one crushing people for wearing socks that reduce trench foot and are actually comfortable-you are part of the problem.

So we should check what the helo guys think?

I'm confused. When did I say anything about the helo guys? Please show me. I'll wait.

In the mean time, let's do check with the helo guys. Yes, the ones that go land on boats, big and small; workup and deploy with an Air wing, and can't order a fucking pizza in their hotel room with per diem, WHILE ON DEPLOYMENT. What is at the heart of Naval Aviation? I would say taking off and landing from things that float. I'm not saying that P-3s / 8s / E-6s aren't a piece of Naval Aviation but rather that they are a little more removed from what is at the core of Naval Aviation.

What I did say is that maybe a reservist who "actually worked with the USAF my whole career" might not have his finger on the Naval Aviation pulse like he thinks he does and maybe he shouldn't get so tired of people voicing their concerns.

Lots of good points already brought up. I did SAPR training 6 times last year. Because each leader up the chain of command said it must be done and no one would stand up and say it's already been completed.
How many O clubs are still open daily and have a good showing? Why the fuck are we trying to remove the word "man" from our vocabulary and not letting females wear skirts to their Academy graduation? Traditions are gone.

If we actually obeyed the tenant of Warfighting First then things would be fine. But that is the furthest thing from the truth.

Yah bro, meat and potatoes of Naval Aviation sounds a lot like helos, for all the reasons you mention (every ship, all the time, can't live without 'em, etc).

If no one in your chain of command is reporting your training complete, or if the training is crippling your ability to do your job, that's a legit problem. Sounds like a problem in the A-18 community leadership. Hope that gets fixed--I hated having to have to watch that ridiculous video more than once (I had to watch it three times actually, being voluntold to be a trainer). Six times is awful.

Yeah, lots of BS in the Navy. Someday we might lose a war because of it, as opposed to losing a war because we're pretty bad at picking our fights.

For the record, no one I've met in the P-8 community has cared about t-shirt color. My command wears yellow shirts and we go off base for stuff all the time in bags.

Maybe I am not as all knowing as you, at least not a VFA guy, but it doesn't mean I have been sitting in USAF cocoon my whole career. It also doesn't mean I can't express a little exasperation at a tired old claim that I have heard from even before I was commissioned, that Naval Aviation is is some sort of precipitous decline. Sorry, I just don't see how a few CBT's and a few lectures on 'don't do stupid' are really destroying our culture. I also miss a few aspects from the 'old days', like good O' Clubs and a 'looser' culture in general, but times change as they always do. The whole culture isn't dead because of a few changes.

I have gotten a little tired of all the doom and gloom crap about Naval Aviation going down the tubes, I heard when I came in almost 20 years ago and it hasn't stopped since...
To be clear. I didn't say all was lost. That NAVAIR was going down the tubes. Yes, the Navy still meets the nation's needs. Yes, there is still fun in it. In fact I would still recommend it to anyone. BUT, the point was, the Navy has gotten more like the USAF while the USAF seems to have not changed very much at all over the same period of time. Show me where in the my posts, excepted below, where I preach doom and gloom? Well, aside from the fact becoming more and more like the AF is cause for gloom. ;)
I can guarantee you, that anyone around in my day finds the Navy more like the USAF today than in our day, and the USAF not much different than it was 30-40 years ago.
Why did the Navy have to get more like the Air Farce?

Let's not forget the add-on active shooting training this year. I passed even though my answers probably weren't exactly what they were looking for...
Kinda surprised "Take her weapon, ammo, grenades and one of her dog tags with you. Continue to take the fight to the enemy." wasn't one of the choices...

So you lose one day doing NKOs? Seems like something that could be done during an SDO day pretty easily.
Don't like the internet speed on NMCI? Get a card reader at home. As someone who also has to do DAU courses on top of NKO my sympathy is minimal. Quit wanking and get it done.

Ah, that's just NKOs. Add in the mandatory training from the wing (1x per week + ~6 topics covered quarterly), the big Navy courses on their issues and it does add up. With that said, I'm not necessarily complaining - I think it's roughly similar to the civilian world - all of my dad's civilian companies have all had similar training, though never mandatory fun. I think people are questioning if we can be a more effective combat force with either better training or training that that is more mission focused. To that end, I've never heard a person in the ready room go through and dissect a HAZREP or mishap and say "dang, that was a waste of my time," but you hear that every time you go through SAPR training or something similar for the 3rd time in a few months.

Dude are you serious???
It's fucking institutional and THAT is the problem...it isn't just one squadron or wing...it's EVERYWHERE.
The navy treats its personnel like they're a bunch of drunk, suicidal rapists.
Do the math-the sheer man hours alone for Adams class and the quarterly SAPR training.
Ween yourself off the Kool-Aid man. The dudes that live it every day are HATING life.
They don't hate the flying, they don't hate their bros-they hate the other bullshit...which is why dudes are getting out droves.
It's worse now then it has ever been. No doubt.
