AMEX Platinum

I downgraded from platinum to gold once I left ACDU since I dont travel enough for the lounge privileges to make sense and price delta in annual fee wasn’t worth it. The gold has a different point structure and you get more points for more suburban pursuits such as gas and groceries.

Can confirm that the you can still use the Amex airline credit for gift cards. Bought 3x $50 Delta certificates and they were reimbursed a couple of days later.

Definitely need to do that. I have about half of my credit remaining for the year.

FYI: You can still get annual fees for AMEX waived as a SELRES (unless of course you retired and this is NA). One of our SELRES let me in on that little nugget.

We've had several SELRES get it waived only to have it put back on there when they realized they were just on orders and not actually on AD. One had his fees charged after almost 2 years. Any specific gouge on how your guys managed this?

Not sure. If AMEX works at all like the Navy, it's probably who you talk to and how you sell it.

I can ask, but speculating it may have been something along the lines of a call that went something like "I'd like to cancel my card" and then a "What can we do to keep your business!?" leading to a discussion of what constitutes grounds to waive the annual fee, and asking for any orders that puts him on ADT/AT, and perhaps weighing the benefits of tens of thousands of dollars of business annually weighed against the cost of the benefits, many of which aren't going to be used by an airline pilot and a management decision to waive.

I guess he'll find out sooner or later if they change their mind. I'll warn him of your story.

This is dumb and probably doesn't apply to many people here, but I totally missed a $550 fee for the AMEX Platinum that was charged when I signed up for the card. My other card (SPG) had already been waived under the SCRA, so I was under the impression the waiver was for all my AMEX cards. You need to apply for the SCRA waiver for each new card you apply for.

I happened to notice that fee this morning when I was combing through Mint.com. Just figured I'd throw it out there in case it helps anybody.

Just message them and let them know. They'll look into it, then make it right. I got an $1000 credit to my account for 2 years worth of previously paid annual fees.

Oh yeah, dealing with it was easy enough. Had I not combed through my statements, I might not have noticed until next year.

Make sure to pick eCerts and not the gift cards. Gift cards show up differently on the credit card statement and will not be reimbursed (as I found out). If you call AMEX on the phone, they’ll give you the line about it “not being covered by the contract.”

Luckily Delta was very nice about giving me a refund, so it all worked out (I didn’t actually need the cards).

Looks like AMEX is trying to close the loophole...

Wow! Did not know this. If there wasn't a shipping charge, I would have totally taken the gift cards. Good to know.
