Up front: the $450 fee is not reimbursed. Hear me out though.

New Chase Sapphire Reserve offers 100k point bonus if you spend $4k in 3 months.

https://www.nerdwallet.com/card-details/card-name/Chase-Sapphire-Reserve

If you use those points to buy travel through the Ultimate Rewards portal, you get 1.5 per point, so $1500 in travel.
.
You get $300 in credit for anything coded travel. Uber, hotels, airlines, airbnb, etc. Comes off your statement automatically. Also this is per calendar year, so you get $300 through Dec 31st, and a new $300 on Jan 1st.

3x points on dining and travel. So if you plan on redeeming your points via the Ultimate Rewards portal, it is really 4.5 points on dining and travel.

I'm trying it for a year since I will come out close to $1500 ahead. I think they will downgrade you to one of their free cards at the end of the year so there is no short term account on your credit report.

No, I used my aviation business info...I got milcomp to cfi...that's a business and should work. Seriously though, I have a few side gigs for aviation business (anybody interested in buying a diamond aircraft, gimme a shout...it can make you $ by leasing it back to your local FBO as a rental) but cfi is good enough.

So, I have some travel coming up this next year for 2 weddings. Flying to SFO and ORD from PNS aren't the cheapest with a wife and a 2 year old coming along. Any idea how to best redeem points for travel? Alitalia seems like the best deal but they don't fly to anywhere I need to go. Any other suggestions on travel hacking if anyone is a bit more experienced in it than I?

Avoid flying on Monday, Thursday, or Friday. (big business travel days, point redemption values go up)

If you don't have enough hotel points to stay for free in SF or Chicago, AirBnB now takes Amex points. Could be a better deal than transferring points.

Check out flights from MOB, PNS, and ECP. Maybe even MGM. You never know what 2 hours' drive will get you.

If you're flying with family, don't try to travel hack it. Way too many moving pieces and not enough flexibility if things go awry.

Use points to purchase via Amex travel vice point xfer. You are 'buying' a normal ticket vice having to xfer points and then search the dregs for a flight. And, you can still get ff miles credit from the airline that you choose.

Update: switched my airline from delta to United, downloaded their app and bought a $200 Amazon gift card. Apparently it codes however Amex wants, so I was reimbursed for the full $200.

Is this black magic working for anyone this year? Did they shut this down or do I need to look harder?

Last chance for the CHASE Sapphire card with its 100,000 point sign up bonus.

Last August, Chase made waves in the points and miles space by introducing an absolutely phenomenal new product — the Chase Sapphire Reserve card. This flagship card quickly became the most appealing option on the market not only because of its exceptional benefits, but also for its unheard of sign-up bonus — 100,000 bonus Ultimate Rewards points after spending $4,000 in the first three months, worth a whopping $2,100 based on TPG’s valuation. However, like all outrageously generous sign-up bonus, this card’s 100,000-point online offer must soon come to an end in just a few days, as Chase confirmed to us exclusively today.

Whew, just made it! Applied for this one a week ago or so. This card is a great deal.

As an aside, I've spent three years in the Navy without an American Express Platinum because I've been waiting for that monster signup bonus that rolls around for 24 hours at a time once every blue moon. I was content with the SPG and Chase Sapphire Preferred, but I think it'll be time to eat my loss and apply for the Platinum as soon as I hit the minimum spend for the Reserve.
