Draft EA for the VRC transition is out. Fleet transition begins in ‘20. Sounds like 120 will divest the COD training mission and a new RAG will stand up, location TBD but either NASNI or Chambers. Foo Dog revival, maybe?

Word from C-2 guys going through transition syllabus at the Marine V-22 FRS is that the Navy FRS will be at NASNI, and that the Marine Corps plans on doing everything in their power to keep Marine tilt guys from flying CODplopters - be it as a member of the green team or the blue team.

Why would they? They’re short manpower as it is. On the other hand, augmenting a Marine unit would be a good way for COD guys to build hours.

I see nothing's changed from the shitstorm that erupted a few years back after DCA found out VFA-106 was giving Rhino NATOPS quals to Marine IPs.

North Island would make more sense, from a real estate standpoint. The Chambers flight line is already pretty crowded...I don’t even know where they’d put a new hangar, sim facility, etc. Are the former VS spaces at NASNI still vacant?

I don't know many who would prefer to be an FRS-I at MCAS New River over living better (and farther from the flagpole) at NASNI. I have no reason (other than hope) to suspect it will be an option, but in my mind it would make sense to send a few Marine IPs over there until the CMV guys get enough experience to teach new guys.

Anecdotally, I've met a couple guys that have been at it awhile and liked the flying but not the lifestyle or the culture or whatever else, so they bumped over to the Navy or even Navy reserves to keep flying and work towards retirement.

I don't disagree with that. Marine IP's belonged a mixed squadron and the squadron's job is to train students; I'm guessing if there is enough commonality between how the hornet and rhino fly and fight then it really doesn't seem like a big deal to me (speculating). If rhino IP's were being NATOPS qualed in the hornet as well it makes perfectly good sense. However, if it was getting the Marines a NATOPS qual to throw in their jacket and then not having them use it... then that is stupid...

Aren’t the navy plopters going to be used in a significantly different mission set? Someone chime in if I’m wrong, but wouldn’t flying a CODplopter kind of degrade a normal plopter dude’s smart pack making proficiency?

NASNI has zero room, as well. The VS hangars are now the CVW HSM hangars. If the VC-22 (or whatever it's called) shared spaces with VRC, then there's "room," but obviously that wouldn't actually work.

There was recently a RFI about putting a permanent training detachment of 5 helos on-site for a time period of a couple of years. NASNI freaked out at the idea. The email chain was kind of an amusing read, as the RFI was to prove there was no room, but it wasn't taken that way initially.
