A couple of CRUDES boats will be permanently homeported in Rota for BMD coverage in the Med. Somewhere between 2 and 6 LCSes in Singapore. I doubt it'd be more than that; Changi just isn't that big a base. Though I imagine it'll be more and more a regular CVN portcall.

I wouldn't be surprised if there's more FDNFs in the next 20 years. If you're keeping requirements the same while reducing ships, the only way to make the math work is to reduce transit time.

That makes more sense. I was imagining a big land based radar/kill vehicle facility. So, I guess they'd just put a single LAMPS-like squadron in there. Can I do my joint tour there? :D I've done Rota a few times, it's great liberty. Some hot locals as well, but there was a strong showing by the uni-brow contingent, if memory serves.

Anyone want to explain what happened with the Helo CAG thing in detail? I wasn't there...I was choppering here in HSM land.

Really? Interesting. Seems counterintuitive from a geographic POV, but what do I know? I'll have to do some reading on that.

BMD shooters out of Rota will be able to protect our very good friends in the Eastern Med without having to sail from Norfolk. This is open source, but I had learned about it while I was at (now defunct) Second Fleet.

Hey, what do I know - I've never been in a CAG, and it has no impact on me - just keep sending us the shitty Phibron COs who know jack & shit about amphibious ops, but know a thing or two about strike... Although I can say that an HSC(cvn) guy will be a CAG WELL before an HSM guy...

I haven't heard that fact mentioned yet. Maybe an interesting idea... of course it sounds like a good deal, so I would guess the Navy would look at sea-swap of crews on the same airframes (and rotate the airframes out every 12-18 months) rather than move a whole squadron to Rota.

No, but we do have some lovely parting gifts for you..... Johnny, tell him what he's won!

Also, I would go to Rota in a heartbeat. Shorebased out of there for a month or so, made a few port calls there - great, great town. Plus Puerto is just down the road...

FIFY.

(This seemingly random joke is inspired by a question to some NHA panel a few years ago, asked by some poor guy who had done an IA as the, IIRC, "assistant to the deputy Afghan historian." The guy's question was about just exactly how RFFs were validated before they turned into IAs... and I got the funny feeling that he wasn't buying the answer he got from the panel.)

Well, at least nobody can say "I told you so".

Or almost everybody can. I'm sure it is one of the two. Just another example where the program would have been fine at double the cost and schedule and honest appraisals of where it stood. But as-is it was always going to fail.
The fact that going OEI during tow ops would always result in loss of the helo was too much to take - the admiral said almost exactly that.
