I literally just ripped the bombing grades from VT's out of my NATOPS jacket, because it was mentioned and because I can. That is the only place they ever existed, and they are now in my toilet. My guess is that whatever ADM Bull said was either misheard, or not heard at all. Last I checked, NFO's/WSO's don't have "bombing grades", yet they are also on the command screen board, competing with pilots who have VT "bombing grades". Maybe someone can refresh my memory, didn't you get some sort of a medal or something when you got a <75' cumulative CEP in T-45's?

Assuming you rolled in manual and didn't use CCIP, you got a "Navy E" and an automatic above in accuracy . . . which the IP could of course offset with a corresponding below at his/her discretion. Think they went in your training jacket somewhere.

We had a similar awards process in the HTs - went into effect if you downed three burritos in Florala during one out-n-in or picked up the phone number of an FBO girl under 50.

Maybe misheard, but definitely heard. I assure you that I'm not the only one in helo-land who has said that as a reference. I have a friend up in Pax right now who has told me the same thing. Obviously, not having bombing grades, I have no idea where they are kept outside of an ATJ. Something feels like less of a rumor when you hear it from an Admiral, though. Sorry for the threadjack.

Have heard of ACSBs going back as far as JO FITREPs (first sea and shore tours) for tie-breakers, but flight school? Not suggesting anyone is having problems with "truthiness," but think it might have been misheard/mistated. As MIDNJAC pointed out, that material isn't even available in the tank - unless someone sends a LTB with their T-45 grades. In which case, I suspect that would serve as a good enough tie breaker.....

I'd call it hyperbole. At least he's being honest with your group about your relative chances WRT other "production" gigs. Something leadership has sometimes glossed over in the past.

Truth. I appreciated hearing it. It was certainly better than the "just keep trying and you'll be fine."

With that said, I guarantee that everyone else in the room took it as seriously as I did. Perhaps all 25 of us misread him that badly.

But, in the aggregate, that's still good advice. Firstly, because we don't know what the promotion playing field will look like two or three years into the future. Secondly, absent a truly lackluster record, people still have a reasonable chance of making O4/DH out of the TRACOM. So, ultimately, your best tactic is to just keep trying. The "you'll be fine" part depends.

I don't disagree, and the stats back up what you're saying, but I did find it at least refreshing to hear someone say, like it or not, you're not to be perceived to be as good as the other guys. Not fun to hear, but the honesty was, as I said, refreshing.

I got an E. Didn't seem to factor into my board.

...but I bet you had a first class PFT, PME, and a current picture. You know...stuff that really shows how you'll run a department or squadron one day.

I can relate to that. Better to go in with both eyes open than with some RADM wool pulled over them.
