Does anybody have any recommendations on shops in the SanDiego area for getting my leather sewn up? Oh, and in keeping with the thread I just have the typsy name patch. No other bling.

No way! I've had them sew shit on my flight gear and I swear a two year old could have done better. We're talking about an heirloom here! I'm not knocking PR's...just my PR's.

I figured that might be what you meant. Fair enough. (I guess I've been spoiled everywhere I've been, although I've broken down and DIY'ed once.)

I got a leather patch sewn on by the tailor shop on Orange Ave in Coronado. I can't remember the exact name but it's right near the Burger Lounge and Rite Aid.
They did a good job sewing a leather squadron patch on my leather.

I disagree ... and at the risk of being dropped from your Christmas card list(s) by crossing swords over your comments ... wearing the FLAG on your flight jacket OR flight suit is all about pride ... personal ... professional ... pride ... & patriotism ... nothing more, nothing less.

Question: why do you (who have earned it) put your Wings of Gold up on the Air Warriors website under your username/callsign ... ??? We all 'know' after a while whether or not you're a Naval Aviator ... :)

You're right about one thing: 'this ain't 'Chotchkie's', boys ... it's the U.S. NAVY.
It's pride ... it's professionalism ... it's the Brotherhood. And we like 'patch bling' ... although there is something to be said for leaving a leather jacket 'pristine'. Or get more than one ... or get a nylon/nomex for your patches.

Now that we agree to disagree on the Flag on the shoulder; I hope you send me a card on my birthday ... :)

So it's O.K. if you want to wear the FLAG on your flight suit or jacket, guys -- do it if you want to. It doesn't matter what others 'think'. You're an American, show your pride, and that's the bottom line.

It does matter what the regulations think, doesn't it? Part of what makes our uniforms look so sharp is how we're not bedecked with eleventy-billion insignia. I'd like to think we have our regulations to thank for keeping that in check, and I like to show my "pride" and "professionalism" by doing things right as much as I can. If I feel I can trick out my uniform however I want, then what's to stop my sailors from doing the same?
Now, if only we could get those regs to keep the greens, we'd all be able to get along.

Are the regs different in DC? It seems like everyone in the Air Force wears one and I've run into a couple of Naval Aviators in bags on the Metro.

....If you saw Navy guys wear them on the Metro, then they were likely working for a Joint command (JCS, JPRA, etc.) that respects the Air Force interpretation....

I doubt that you see them anymore, the Director of the Navy Staff put out a memo just a few months ago reminding everyone of the rules about Navy flight suits, meaning that the unofficial practice of guys wearing them at joint commands in DC was not allowed and had to stop. Haven't seen a Navy guy in a flight suit in DC since.

For God's sake, don't put on the flag shoulder patch.

Do people ever come up to you while you're in uniform asking what country you're from? No? Then you don't need a flag patch.

I know you're patriotic. Presumably you have to be to sign up for 8+ years of the Big Green/Blue Gun Club. You don't have to prove it.

It's also unauthorized (see (3) in the first post), but I am probably going to do it anyways just to balance out the platform patch on the other shoulder.

Try not to be ridiculous. Of course the 'regs' matter -- 'cept we weren't so constipated that we required regulations and had to have 'higher authority' tell us where/when/how 'patches' and the like were to be placed on a flight suit and/or flight jacket.

Yeah ... Aviation Greens are 'da Bomb and the tragedy is they are goin' away -- so eat your heart out. Bet you wish you'd been there 40 years ago, yea-as???

But still, they're a uni' and we didn't wear patches on 'em, as I'm sure you are aware -- so I don't get your point. Zoom bags & flight jackets .... patches .... zoom bags and flight jackets .... patches ... zoom bags and flight jackets ... patches ... please feel free to repeat as necessary.

Let's see ...

It's YOUR Navy that sez: you CAN wear this patch; you CAN'T wear that one ... and it's O.K. here ... but it's NOT O.K. there ....

It's YOUR Navy that is shitcanning Aviation Greens, isn't it?? It's YOUR Navy that sez: Aviation Greens -- what ARE they good for -- ABSOLUTELY NUTHIN' !!!

Hey, man -- it's YOUR Navy that's fucked up -- not mine.

I hate to use JoBoy as an example, but if you peruse this thread, he got his done at a motorcycle shop in SanDog and it looked pretty good. Maybe give him a shout and ask where it was done.

Oh, and I'm going to rock the Navy Jack when I rock the leather. Still trying to decide if I want the stock version or the "aftermarket" nicer one.

I take it the 'riggers don't sew patches anymore...
and has cumshaw gone by the boards?
A pity.

Regs Schmegs.. If the Red Rippers can wear their "whatever the hell they are" red jackets as a uniform, and the Vics just do.. Well whatever, I'm gonna wear what patches I want and Aviation Greens.

(some times, you just have to say to hell with the regs, and know when you can tell people to stuff it)

The riggers still sew patches on but most guys I know wanted someone with a little more experience, most of the PR's didn't have a lot of experience with the leather on leather.

Not to mention tiny vestigal arms.
