And that's stretching the word "transparency" about as far as you possibly can.
Even that’s a stretch.
There really wasn’t much in there...
“Yeah we did a survey -and the answer is you want more money”
No Admiral, it isn’t and, again, you missed the point.
It isn’t even about flight hours...it’s about the lack of choice and cookie cutter career progressions that take you away from flying..so yes, it is about flying, but not necessarily flight hours (on the macro level).
On the micro level-it’s not even about flight hours-it’s about the flight hours being mis prioritized and replaced by bullshit HQs requirements that need to be done immediately… Tomorrow by noon… Today by 3 PM...smoking cessation and alcohol awareness and 40 hours of SAPR....it’s about treating officers like ADULTS and letting them do the job they signed up for-....not to meet some bullshit check in the block training so some O-6 who owns whatever bullshit training section can make O-7...just so they can proliferate even more bullshi as an admiral.

It isn’t about money-it’s about taking care of your people when they come home from battle..slashing the bonuses in 20111.you slashed bonuses for guys who have been to war zones and back for 9 years. What a great way to say thanks!

Lastly, we’re in the goddamned military-not the fucking Mormon Tabernacle choir-we Fucking kill people, and we want to drink and get laid. Stop making us out to be pariahs when we want to do what every Fucking warrior class in history has done. We’re not Fucking pariahs because we want to get drunk and screw.

A fairly well-reasoned response/recommendation here: https://blog.usni.org/posts/2018/03/16/want-to-fix-aviator-retention-dont-promote-them.

While there's a lot against his particular recommendation, his replies in the comments section also offer a delay in the O3-O4 transition to build the white space. Also, enjoyed his plug for CNP's Sailor 2025 message in the footnotes.

To Brett, do you think this clears up the argument for the sorts of challenges/solutions folks are seeing besides JUST pay adjustments?

A few quick questions from an SNA/SNFO hopeful, is this becoming a growing trend in the military as a whole where the focus is less on warfighting and more on what seems like BS "training"?

Every community in the Armed Forces that I read about it seems like this is the case. I've heard the military described as a "social experiment" on occasion. Besides the fact that it seems like this hurts retention/job satisfaction, doesn't this hurt the effectiveness of our military as a whole?

From my nearly 28 year perspective, it ebbs and flows a bit, but has remained fairly steady overall. I spend less than 1 percent of my time at work doing the various mandatory training briefs. In fact, with a few exceptions, they've recently given unit COs discretion on how/when to accomplish most of the training requirements. Anecdotally, it seems like the Marines, VP and RW folks sweat this stuff more than TACAIR, but that's just my interpretation of comments here over the years.

I'm not sure what you're asking. Monetary incentives are one of what should be many approaches to increase retention.

Am I reading this right that you don’t get the bonus until you’ve screened for O4? What exactly is the point of a rentention bonus that you don’t get until you’re likely *past* your MSR?

It is all so clear...only those pilots without options will wait for the board...they'll stay in and continue to propagate mass amounts of bullshit for future generations.
They just don't get it.

and fucking helo pilots get 175K??? What the ever-loving fuck?????!!!
...good for them...but they're not the ones bailing for the airlines in droves.

Well, when you only need 4 VQ(T) pilots a year for DH you probably don’t need to pay out a whole lot of bonus money.

Okay, so, what do the 1320’s get for ADHB?
I didn’t understand the paragraph regarding them, and they aren’t listed...

I don't have 28 years, but I think if folks are being honest with themselves, they would probably admit that BS GMT is a minuscule time suck in the life of your average aviator. If it is taking that much time out of your day(s), you probably need to get more creative in how you meet the requirement in a reasonable amount of time, stiff arm it, or tell people to STFU and completely disregard. I remember a day when we knocked out an entire year of GMT (while completely bypassing NKO) in a series of in person JO presentations, each topic of 3 slides or less of content, completed in around 15 minutes. If you aren't empowered to be creative yourself, your leadership certainly has the leeway to be, and it might be worth being the dude/gal who suggests a better way of doing business if they aren't. I know this probably doesn't apply in VP, you guys are just F'd.
