7 FEB 2018 Aviation Board

So if anyone cares, when I did my appraisals for my Officer package one of the the gentlemen I spoke with is an active duty pilot who will likely make Admiral this year (one of the officers in my chain worked for him in the past and asked him to do one of my appraisals). He was very candid about the current state of naval aviation and I will summarize what he said:

1. It is a very very good time to become a pilot. They have revamped the bonus system, meaning more money in pilot’s pockets, and the advancement-to-next-pay-grade issues of the past have been resolved.
2. Expect the Navy to push a lot of people toward the Super Hornet this year, and that includes both the EA version and the kinetic strike version.
3. The helo community has a healthy outlook and it will be very competitive to get a slot this coming up year in helo training for this reason. They simply are playing the numbers game right now and they are content with their numbers.

Just thought I would share some good info from a very high ranking Navy flyer.

Applied: INTEL(Dec board, prorec No), NFO
Age: 21
Degree: International Studies, Economics
GPA: 3.8
OAR: 59
ASTB 6/5/6
PROREC for NFO: No
LOR's: two professors, one past employer

I'm very disappointed that I didn't get selected. I had previously applied to INTEL back in December and didn't get selected then either. I spoke with my recruiter who said that he was very surprised I couldn't get in. According to him I was an application score of 94. I'm committed to commissioning with the Navy for NFO and so I'm going to get another LOR from a retired O4 in the army and my recruiter is going to revise my package to try and make it look a little better while trying to find 2-3 officers to perform a few interviews with me so we can add that to my package. He tells me there will be another opportunity to apply for NFO in April, so I guess it's going to be more waiting for me. At least it will give me some more time to work out.

I didn't have that much volunteer or leadership experience so I guess that might have brought me down along with my LOR's, but I don't know.

Hate to burst your bubble, but LORs don't really matter for aviation boards. Your scores are decent so I'm not sure why they didn't pick you up for NFO. If you have waivers or something like that, that may be what the problem is.

I don't think I had any waivers. No health issues or anything like that and no criminal history. *shrug*

Yeah, my recruiter said that LOR's aren't really that important, but he said that it couldn't hurt to get an additional one since my qualifications were pretty competitive.

Yeah the only thing they really care about for Aviation is ASTB and GPA. You're right that it can't hurt, but it's also not going to push you over the top.

I guess I could take the ASTB again. It'd be a risk though if I get a lower score since my current scores are okay. However, it looks like I might need much better than okay.

Boards don't care about LORs or interviews when it comes to Aviation. Retake the ASTB and improve your FOFAR at the very least.

As for Intel, preference goes to STEM degrees over non-stem. Poli Sci and International Relations/Studies grads are a dime a dozen.

Chin up, buddy. I didn't get selected for SNA this round either. Though I'm more surprised you didn't get it given your credentials vs mine...
ASTB - 43 5/7/5
3.3 B.S in Commercial Aviation
400 Total Flight hours

I'd try to get in touch with someone who's actually flown aircraft in the Navy. I was transferred to a new recruiter who flew Helo's... He seems to have a lot more concrete answers for my questions/how to strengthen my package. You could always roll the dice and just reapply. There's guys on here that will tell you they've applied 3-4 times before they got picked up...

Hey @Meyerkord, Good luck to you at OCS this weekend! Thought I'd wish you luck while I remember and before you take off which I assume is Friday or so. Hopefully I'll see you in the fleet one day.
Thanks my dude! I honestly don't know when I fly out yet, lol. They were talking about Saturday but I haven't gotten my official plane tickets yet.

Hope to catch you in the fleet as well. And hope you're able to make the next board successfully. Good luck!
