27 SEPTEMBER 2015 OCS Class

psulaw0929

OCS Class 04-16, 27 SEP 2015
@psulaw0929 I believe you want white to go with the white uniform. You don't want your black or blue showing through. So just a few pair of white, but the rest can be of your choosing. This is my understanding. Hopefully someone can correct me if I am wrong?
-edited for spelling

Thanks. That was my understanding as well. I wore whites previously when I was enlisted which is why I tried to clarify "aside" from in whites. I already packed a few pair of white, even though it's unlikely that our class will ever wear whites while at OCS since it will be fall/winter. I only brought it up since navygraig specifically stated "white skivvies (underwear)." I didn't want to be stuck relying only on the two pairs of white underwear I'm planning on bringing, and I'm sure y'all don't want me to either ;).

I don't think it will matter what color skivvies you have as long as you have white ones for inspection and your whites. This class should not be wearing whites for any occasion during training since the switchover to blues will happen soon.

Well, as for underwear, I bought a 7 back of white briefs. probably will bring a few pairs that are more comfortable. Needless to say, those white briefs will be disposed of after graduation. But hey, we are in September now! Not much longer folks!

@navygraig The OCS site seems very clear about bringing original SSC and Birth Certificates for all dependents, as well as Spouses ID card (if not entered into DEERS). I have been told that photo copies are fine. Sir would you be able to provide some clarification? I would rather not take all these documents from my wife if I don't have to in case she should need them while I am gone. Especially my wife's drivers license.

Thank you sir in advance.

Ok I just checked with the staff in the student services office. They said it DOES in fact need to be original docs. But you can mail them home once no longer needed here. Do not bring original driver's license. Bring a copy of that. Hope this helps.

@navygraig Thank you again for the great advice. I think I can speak for everyone by saying that we should understand, by now, that if "I QUIT" is not in our vocabulary and we press on regardless, then we will be fine in the end. Very good advice though. I think the only thing we should be concerning ourselves with is making sure we bring with us the items that we need to have immediately before we are allowed to go to the NEX, as well as bringing all the correct forms, whether we are single or married, and making sure we are already very familiar with Appendix B to relieve some stress we will be facing.

I have 3 questions though and that should cover it:

1. I am prior Air Force. The only have two medals that transfer over, The National Defense Medal (which we all will receive) and the Global War on Terrorism Medal. I have never had to wear my blues since I graduated Technical School, will there be medals and ribbons available for sale near the training complex, or is it imperative that I have them already? I do have 2 full sets of the full size ribbons, but no minis or medals.

2. As for shoes, like I stated earlier, I have a pair of asics that are blue and grey so they go well with the PT uniform. As for a second pair of shoes, I have been wanting to buy a pair of Reebok Nano's 4.0, the all grey pair with black toe and sole, would that be appropriate for OCS? I know out here they are authorized in our PT gear, but I know in BMT they were very strict with PT shoes. I know I am probably overthinking this, but I just wanted a good pair of shoes to have for calisthenics days, as well as a good pair of workout shoes if we end up being allowed gym time during CandiO phase.

3. I also am curious about @iFly14 question as well.

Thank you!
1. Your national defense ribbon will be issued to you. You can buy the other at the uniform shop if needed. You won't be wearing those until week 6 anyway.

2. Shoes. Don't nuke it. We don't care what color they are here. We just care that they are in good shape and will not cause injury.

3. Docs all need to be original with the exception of dependent's driver's license.

@navygraig being prior, but in the guard, I have my wife already entered into DEERS. Will that mean I should still bring her documents, or will I need to re-enter it being in a different branch?

4 weeks peeps! ahhhh
Everyone should be flying (if you're not driving here) into T.F. Green (PVD) airport which is just outside Providence, RI. Orange Cab runs a shuttle to Newport and can access the base. If you use your report letter (those of you that aren't priors) you can stay at the Navy Gateway Inns on base. It is much cheaper than out in town and you won't need to get another cab to get to base. Call them and make a reservation for the shuttle at (401) 841-0020.

If you decide to stay off base for the night prior to reporting that is fine, but here is some tips: 1. make the reservation through the hotel directly (ie NOT on Travelocity, etc) because you need to retain a copy of the receipt from the hotel for reimbursement on your travel claim; 2. You can call Orange Cab to pick you up at the hotel and drive you onto base. DO NOT plan on walking. It is a very long walk. My rec: Arrange some groups through this site and the FB group. Work together.

If you're driving then you will need your reporting orders and your driver's license in order to access base. Once on follow the signs for "OCS Arrivals" and the Candi-Os will help direct you to the student parking lot. And I'll just put this out there... Do NOT plan on being able to access your car very much, and DO NOT plan on storing items that are prohibited in your cars to be had when you do access it (ie candy, cigarettes, cell phones, etc). There are always eyes on you one way or another here so why risk the punishment, but more importantly... have some integrity and honor and don't do something you know you're not supposed to.

If anyone has any travel concerns let me know so I can help you.

You SHOULDN'T need to bring them. However, should and shouldn't are two of my favorite words in the service. You know how that goes... So my rec is that you bring them anyway. Better to be over prepared.

As far as documents go, I know that the OCS website states we need to bring medical and dental records but my recruiter stated those only needed to be brought of it relates to a waiver we have. Should I go with the website on this one? Also, transcripts aren't required to be brought are they?

Thank you for all the information.

I asked the same questions today and he said they should have everything because it was required for applying. Just to bring immunization records if you didn't wanna get the same shots again

Your recruiter is correct. When I reported to OCS way back when I only brought immunization records. If you have any special medical/dental concerns then bring your record. Otherwise, the Navy will create a new med/dental record on you that you are going to take to every assignment with you. Transcripts are not required.
