12 APR 17 SNA/SNFO Board

If you want to fly, apply to the Air Force. Judging by what's been in the news I wouldn't join the marine corps if you want to fly. I say that without judgement just my experience working the navy and Air Force sides. I wouldn't change a thing in my own history, but if a kid told me today he wants to fly in the military, I'd say join the Air Force.

Could you please elaborate on why you wouldn't fly Marines?

They seem to be actively recruiting for aviation right now, just based on empirical evidence. I spoke with an OSO the other day he says he can pretty much guarantee a flight slot with good PFT scores.

Also just got my pro rec Y for SNA posted on bupers and also no word on my SNFO results.
I know a few other Applicants on this board were with the CVN 70 strike group. If any of you also got selected the first round of drinks is on me if we ever hit a port.
Dope! I'm on the Vinson. I also got PRO REC SNA. I got an email from the Fleet Processor and then I saw the result on BOL. First round on you shipmate! lol

I'll defer to Marines to talk intelligently on the subject, but just hearing rumors and seeing news headlines about how Marines aren't able to fly minimum hours per year, birds are broken and funding isnt there to keep them up, I'd be more inclined to fly for the Air Force which has far more funding and way more flying opportunities. I've also (anecdotally) noticed a lot more of my Marine friends not flying on their shore tours, whereas Air Force guys I worked with routinely flew to the end of their contract.

Again, take my word with a grain of salt and let some Marines chime in.

That's the first time I've ever heard anyone defer to Marines to talk intelligently about anything.

I'm not real sure how all this works for us fleet guys. My command knows so far via Bupers, but nothing else has happened as far as FINSEL, orders, or tentative dates.
The Fleet Processor emailed me he says it takes 6-8 weeks, so just sit tight and stay out of trouble. The command will get to you.

4 years out of the Air Wing and not a pilot so take with a grain of salt as well.

If you're going to fly in the Marines you must understand the culture is complete different than the other branches. The Marines mission is infantry first and everyone else is support. Plus the road to wings includes OCS and 6 months of TBS( infantry platoon leader development) all before any flight school which will include all the other fun/suck(depending on you) that comes with the Marines. Also I'm pretty sure selection like everything in the Marines, is PT centric. Also as a Marine aviator you will more than likely to a ground tour with an infantry unit as an Air Officer or FAC which will put you on the ground with the door kickers. Finally last I saw they were taking aircraft parts out of museums to keep some of their aircraft flying and last year a hornet basically disintegrated in the air while training in Twentynine Palms. You have to understand the mantra of every Marines a rifleman and every officer is a infantry platoon leader., if you want to be Marine first and foremost go that route but if not it may be hard to justify everything else that comes with it.

That's a demerit.
Congrats, search functions not working right now. But do you mean they actually gave you a PRO REC N in previous boards with your scores??
Thank you! But nah, I have been through multiple recruiters, various surgeries that required waivers, a recruiter that was learning the ropes along the way (and unfortunately missed board submission deadlines and misplaced paperwork). A long(ish) road, but it will be damn worth it in the end. Your astb scores are off the charts man, great job!

PRO REC Y PILOT!!!......for the Air Force!!! Haha congrats to everyone else selected and best of luck to y'all. See ya in the sky's!
What was your experience like applying to fly with the air force? Harder than OCS for the Navy? What were your scores ETC? I got Y for SNFO but stick jockey is preferred. Just exploring all opportunities.
