1,001 questions about the ASTB (post your scores & ask your questions here!)

Taking the test on June 25th for the August board. Does anyone have any practice test material? I've already taken the test once and have found that the Petersons practice guide was really close to the real thing, and am trying to find similar practice tests.

Don't bother with "The Complete ASTB Study Guide". I find it to be very relaxed in comparison to actual test questions. I bought it looked through it once and haven't picked it up again. I definitely recommend Barron's as it has loads of valuable information. I would also recommend taking a look through "Peterson's Master the Military Flight Aptitude Tests" (PDF can be found online) which has plenty of good material as well. My absolute best advice, however, would be to go back to pages ~259 &~281 and check out what some of the guys who scored above a 70 had to say. They have great insight and study tips. One of them even posted some material regarding the OAR along with an MST study guide that you may find useful. Best of luck to you.
Thank you! I greatly appreciate the help!

If you live in the DC area, I'd be willing to pass my Barron's book off to you. I bought it to study for the OAR and the AFOQT (Air Force). I had very little time to study between a newborn, work, and a full time schedule, but I managed to get a 50. I also used a free GRE prep app that has questions of the day pertaining to math and reading. It was just a simple 5 or 10 minute thing I did first thing in the morning to get my brain going.
Do you remember which GRE Prep app you used or will any one of them do? I have an iPhone and found several on the App Store.
Thank you for the help! I greatly appreciate it!

Magoosh has practice questions and samples. It has a free trial, so after the free trial I stopped using it, and Varsity Tutors GRE prep is what I used daily for word knowledge and math problems. There is only one question in each section per day, but if you want tutoring, that is what the app is meant for.

I also had two sets of Quizlet flashcards. Search AFOQT. Having taken both tests, they are very similar with information with the exception being reading comprehension geared towards the AF rather than the Navy.

I took the ASTB almost two years ago and wanted some feedback about applying to be a pilot. My recruiter said my scores are really competitive and recommended I don't retake for a higher score. Can anyone vouch for this? I feel like it's lower compared to other scores I've seen posted here.

Well, it's not the most amazing I've seen, but your recruiter is probably right. Above 50 is competetive for the OAR depending on what you're applying for, and above 5/6/6 for the Aviation portion is also pretty good. Combine that with an above average STEM GPA and you've got a reasonable chance of getting accepted for most things you'd be applying for. (As far as I can tell, Keep in mind I'm still in the process of trying to be accepted as well.)

So unless you're extremely confident you could score higher the second time around, it's probably not necessary to make another attempt.

Thanks for the feedback. What is considered an average STEM GPA? I've always been an above 4.0 student in high school so 3.33 is pretty low to me, but college is just so damn hard haha

EDIT: Also, I literally studied for like two hours at most for the OAR AND ASTB the day before, so I feel like if I really tried I could definitely score a higher OAR.

Recent Pilot/NFO Board had a large chunk around the 3.2-3.4 range.

Hello all. My name is Matt Moriarty and I am a freshman in college with a 3.7 gpa. I'm undeclared with my major right now. I'm taking the ASTB on the 31st. Any last minute tips for me? Ill post my results after the test. Thanks.

Honestly I think taking it that early in your college career may be a disadvantage.

What are your highest levels of Math, English, Core Sciences, and History taken at the collegiate level? What are your methods in studying?

The difference between freshman me and senior me was outstanding.

What's up all just took my ASTB, not half bad scores.

54 6/8/7

Lots of great study materials on here, thanks to everyone who supplied information!

Something I would like to mention: Make sure your testing equipment is working properly

While I was taking the OAR my computer restarted once and the ASTB program crashed twice. I was able to pick back up where I left off, but it always started on a different question so I don't know how the crashes impacted my overall score. I can't complain with a 54 OAR, but I feel I could have done vastly better without the disruptions as they cause you to lose focus.

A lot of grades in front of you to derail or inflate that 3.7.
I can see that. Hoping to boost it up next semester. For extracurriculars, I am on the school swim team, president of the national honor society, and volunteer at a local homeless shelter. Any other feedback you have would be appreciated.
