Yeah, I'm trying to get into the PRK study (said LASIK - oops). My OR told me to notify the NAMI folks when we get to P'cola and (as long as they want me) I should be able to have the surgery after basic flight training. Unfortunately my rotten little eyeballs were my only disqualification.

Hopefully you will get into a class soon! Do you have a back-up plan in case the Navy takes it's dear sweet time getting you approved?

Well when they were talking about totally separating me medically from the Navy a month or two ago I started the process to get into law school (almost went for a JAG program instead of BDCP) and am scheduled to take the LSAT on 01 Oct. But now that it's looking like I should be cleared and able to fulfill my obligation as a naval aviator I'm debating on waiting to take the LSAT before I go to OCS or if I get put into an earlier class postponing that for another year or two (you can take it up to five years later, I believe). I've always said that depending on viable options at the end of 10 years of flying I could consider letting the Navy pay for my law degree and maybe go JAG for the second half of my career, etc. That's long term...

If I don't get into a class before the 27 Nov class I'll request to be moved to an earlier one, and if not then request an age waiver due to the circumstances that kept me from going in on my earlier two dates (achilles tendon injury). If that doesn't work, then I'll succumb and redesignate to NFO or maybe AMDO...but that's only after commissioning. For example, if the first two options fail then I'll attend OCS as scheduled until the issue is brought up (i.e. they bring up the issue during or towards the end of OCS) and they give me orders. If it's not for pilot and instead NFO I'll take the issue up with the CoC and go from there. I will be happy if I go as either pilot or NFO, but I swore in as pilot and that's what I truly want to do...plus I don't care to be a "rider" but like being in control (just ask my wife, I drive everywhere) and pilots act as the "chauffeurs" to the NFOs while they do the majority of the work LOL... All joking aside, I'm glad to be able to do either job, but based on what I've been told from other pilots and NFOs in both the Navy and other branches, I want the pilot slot.

Thanks. J-ville is Hot and Humid!!! Take a shower and you're sweating again as soon as you step outside.

I hear you there - our shoes are sticking to the pavement. It's hot.

I agree - I know that I could have a long and happy career as an NFO (I mean, someone has to point the plane in the right direction) but I really have an interest in flying helos. If I could get the opportunity, I'd appreciate it.

I'm almost ready to say "bring on the Newport winter"...almost. I hate the cold weather, but (other than the mild break in the weather today and possibly next week too) we are dying with this 100-110*+ weather and lack of rain. The lakes are getting so low that the water supply is starting to taste a little funky. At least in RI we may get to see a little bit of a Fall season, in TX we're lucky if it's more than a week...we go from wearing shorts to coats in the blink of an eye sometimes.

And as far as the LASIK waiver, I was under the impression that the PRK was the only method allowed for non-priors, but they were in trial for current servicemen who wanted LASIK to see if it was compatible, etc. Did they approve it now?
Ya, they have a LASIK in student naval aviators now also. I didn't know this until my doctor told me when I was about to get PRK.

But as with all Naval Aviators, NAMI has the final say in aviation status.

I had PRK done after I was DQ'd for a pilot slot over a year ago. I had the surgery May 2010 and reapplied 6 months later and was accepted again. I was told to get PRK and that LASIK may soon be acceptable but they both work. Just different operations and both have +'s and -'s. PRK I can tell you sucked during recovery. Felt like a cigarette was put out on my eye ball but I went from 20/80 to 20/15.

Ya that is why I choose LASIK. My Doctor knew a current navy doctor in San Diego and recommended LASIK. There was no recovery to speak of. I went from 20/400 to 20/25 day 1 and 20/20 after the first week. If my vision slips and I need LASIK again, it will be a real quick event hopefully.

Well, the cigarette bit sounds suck-tastic, but if it can do anything about my 20/350 I'll pleased as punch.
