“Information Warfare Is a Second-Class Commissioning Community”

For now this should be considered a fluke. There aren't yet any viable plans to make an 1840 career path to O-6.

“Information Warfare Is a Second-Class Commissioning Community”

That's close to what I mean.... IW culture, as a whole, is to be the "supporting" versus the "supported." If they hope to make IW commander truly successful they need to change that. To be clear, I know that IW is supporting right, but I think the CNO has a vision for something more in the...

“Information Warfare Is a Second-Class Commissioning Community”

It's funny you say that. One guy I know calls the 1820s "ABC"... Always Be Condescending. Now that I know a number of them, I think it is very funny. I agree with the rest of what you said. I could write endlessly about the culture problems that keep the IW community, and its tribes, from...

“Information Warfare Is a Second-Class Commissioning Community”

Yes, it has traction at the highest levels. However, the proposed changes aren't as simple as URL vs RL. It's really about command at sea and being able to create an IW commander that is a true peer to the other warfare commanders. When I say peer, I don't mean so that everyone can feel good...

“Information Warfare Is a Second-Class Commissioning Community”

It's not going to happen this year. It's got a solid chance next year. There is a statutory change that has to happen before any changes in the Navy can occur.

Road to 350: What Does the US Navy Do Anyway?

That's good point. I guess you really do "stand where you sit."

Road to 350: What Does the US Navy Do Anyway?

It's weird... as SECDEF he seems to be taking a more conservative approach to ISR, really looking at the risk versus reward.

I think it gets charged right away. If I recall, they don't wait until your approved because you get charged no matter what (i.e. approved or denied).

    AMEX Platinum

Are you talking about the AMEX fee? I am pretty sure that is charged on your AMEX "anniversary" so to speak. It's based on when you signed up for the card (possibly your first AMEX).

    Naval History and Heritage Command

The new(ish) director is working very hard to make that happen. Not to say previous leadership hasn't tried. I just read their white paper that recounts 20 years of missed opportunities.

How to Address Rear Admiral (Selects) and other "Selects"

In my observation for 2 Flag cycles here at OPNAV, RDML selects keep with their CAPT title, but everyone knows they're a select. I think the exception would be if they are doing some task for their upcoming Flag job (i.e. arranging for meetings after they assume the new job). I think in...

How to Address Rear Admiral (Selects) and other "Selects"

That's not true. In fact, one of the more common times to frock an officer is for Flag. Even for other officer ranks, officers are frocked in a variety of situations.

    Information being weapon of choice

VADM Gilday really gets this stuff and he's great at explaining why/how this stuff is important in the bigger picture. In fact, he's better at it than a lot of the IW flag wardroom.

    NFO to OCEANO or IW?

What kind of info? Most of the people I know who made the switch were SWOs. When you say IW officer, do you mean a cryppie?

    US SPACE (MARINE) CORPS

I doubt it. The Services have known about this idea since at least April. Edit: Rogers told everyone about it in April - http://spacenews.com/rogers-calls-for-separate-space-corps-within-the-air-force/
  21. HH-60H

    US SPACE (MARINE) CORPS

My impression is that the AF has been prioritizing space just fine, but for their own needs. I think Congress doesn't feel the other Services are doing enough and/or there is enough coordination.

    Declining Commission

It's not really a pay cut, it's forced retirement savings. A GS is allowed to spend that money (both the employee contributions and the TSP matching) on anything they want over the course of their retirement. Not to mention the government contributes 1% into TSP even if an employee contributes...

LOR vs Character Reference -- LASIK Waiver Availability -- Lying to MEPS under advisement of an OR

Overall, I have to say that I am troubled by the way you appear to be perceiving and interacting with the recruiters. First, you didn't believe your OR so you called his boss who said the same thing, and then you come here looking for validation of the opposite advice. Second, you state that...

    SPEAR is 30

Can you expound a bit? The SWO equivalent of SPEAR (called SABER) does not have intel officers at all. Typically, SPEAR does have one 1830 assigned (and sometimes a USMC intel O also). Unfortunately, it's not a very competitive job for mid to senior LTs, which is the main reason we don't get...

USAA vs. NFCU: VA Loan, post-housing bubble Edition

If you shop around you can find lenders that will actually pay the closing costs (i.e. not add them to the balance) As @Flash said, it's usually easier when you refinance. That being said, I refinanced from a non-VA to a VA loan and it was the most difficult mortgage event I have ever...

@erield This is going to sound harsh, so be warned. Your essay needs a lot of work. It is ridiculously wordy and often times nonsensical. For example This doesn't make sense. The United States is a what? You need to answer that question for this sentence to make sense. Even if you get rid...
