Job prospects for NFO's after the Navy

For whatever it's worth, I'm looking into pimping post-navy. But I hear it ain't easy.
  2. K

    Weight

Sadly, the navy (can't speak intellignetly about the Marines) lights up a large crack pipe when it comes to things like height/weight. Supposedly I should be no more than 192 for my height - I haven't been that since I was a sophomore in high school. And at least for the way my body is built...

    F-18 Brake Problems

FWIW, a direct quote from a Hornet pilot I work and fly with: "That story is a crock of sh*t."

    another prowler thread

If you get winged around 2007, and you want to go into electronic attack, odds are QUITE good you'll be going EA-6Bs.
  5. K

I'll have a jet for two please, preferably near the window...

I don't much enjoy flying alone. Because it probably means I'm either already in the parachute, or about to be.
  6. K

Talk to me about the Prowler community

Actually, I think the proportion is closer to the fleet proportion - at least it was in my class, and there's actually 3 Prowler pilots on staff down here, out of 7 JO instructors (branch head don't count :icon_wink )

5 things you love about Naval Aviation

10 v 13 over the desert Club + Dice = cheap drinks cheaper 'Hook The fact that a roaring alcoholic in civilian world is a "social drinker" in my line of work. 2 planes, 8 JOs, and a 5 leg cross-country...

Illegal Aliens Apprehended On Air Force Base

if they're not deported, how much you wanna bet they end up working on the base again as the convict labor janitors and groundskeepers????

    Renter's Insurance

I'll put in another plug for USAA. They are all I've ever used for renter's insurance. They're easy to deal with, and the poicy is so affordable that you literally can't afford NOT to get one.

    PRK while active duty

Touche on the night traps. I'm already on ONE waiver (that took me 13 months and two tries to get). Aside from the admittedly irrational phobia, I'm of the opinion that the farther away from BUMEDs radar I am the better...

    PRK while active duty

As Brett says, I've seen people do it in their first fleet squadron (during a slow time - of course, not so many of those any more) and right after getting to shore duty. As for me, I have an inexplicable and irrational fear of it...

    Christmas wedding

I'm pretty sure that I kept whatever negative sentiment I had towards the institution of marriage OUT of my post. My advice was honestly meant to improve the young couple's chance of success. But since it's become quite manifest that no one who starts these threads is interested in sound...

    Why did you join?

Never sought out a recruiter. Not in your order, but here goes; 1. To fight and win my country's wars. 2. Why Navy? To fly. 3. Why not Air Force? To fly off boats. 4. Why not civilian aviation? Because civilian aviation doesn't turn bad guys into hair, teeth and eyeballs...

    missile guidance explained

it has to do with an incredibly embarassing self-revelation. Brett, I'm surprised. You can't possibly NOT know. the callsign is INFAMOUS in VAQland
  16. K

    Christmas wedding

Not just distracting you at flight school, but realize you may very well not have enough time to be much of a husband. I know many folks, me included, who didn't make it to the first cruise.

    another wedding post

After your winging. Chicks you may or may not meet on cross countries not withstanding (the only thing I've met on cross countries is Red Bull&Vodka and hangovers), flight school is a hell of a way to introduce a bride to the navy. If I knew then what I know now, I'd have waited till life...

    Winging Ceremony

If memory serves, Wings N Things in Pensacola (near the air station) sold them. In fact, it's still listed on their on-line catalog. I don't know if they actually sell them on line or not, but worth a try... I found their site. http://www.flywings.com/default.htm also 1-800-642-9464

    VQ-2 Moving

To say nothing of the parking on that damn base... by the time they finished that stupid second fence it took me longer to walk from where I parked to the hanger than it did to drive from my house to the gate.

haha I love this video, it made my day!

Believe me, I know full well that I'm not someone who has any business running around armed full time... (let alone with a badge...)

haha I love this video, it made my day!

that is AWESOME. I obviously lack the patience to be a cop - about halfway through the ordeal I'd be strongly inclined to pull something OTHER than the tazer....

FNAEB or VOL. Term? Which is the Best of 2 evils?

As it's relatively new, stats (if they exist) are probably pretty low, but I think it's getting to happen more and more.
  27. K

FNAEB or VOL. Term? Which is the Best of 2 evils?

Automatically for a class A, but that's not at issue here. Though I'm not privy to how the P-3 world works, in the VAQ community in the last couple years, a new instruction came out that said any first tour pilot or NFO who did not complete ACTC Level III (ie mission commander) within a...

Treatment of NFOs in the fleet

I'm with Brett on this one. The only time I've ever come close to "feeling like a second class citizen" is when some schmuck with an inferiority complex tries to drag me down with him.
  29. K

Treatment of NFOs in the fleet

Chick did fine. For the record, ME sucks a lot less when you're NOT a student. There were more than just salt stains - me and Clam Shell doing "quality control" inspections at Gilleys - and me finding out emprically that on Saturday night Gilley's doesn't close till 5AM Sunday.

Treatment of NFOs in the fleet

You should have seen the look on a squadron XO's face last month when he asked me for help on StriPP and I told him I've never used it :D (StriPP - a computer program that does in 30 minutes what Kolja, the back of a napkin, and a bit of zen can figure out in 5).

Shore tour options, Masters degrees, and their effects on careers...

My comments weren't so breif earlier in the thread - and when i wrote that last one, I was on dial-up from a hotel near Nellis, nursing a hangover and looking forward to manning up in 100 degree temps ;)
  33. K

Treatment of NFOs in the fleet

shhh - there might be reprocussions if anyone finds out I got this far without knowing a beep from a squeak!
  34. K

    Getting Married during NFO training?

    1. NFO/WSO training is a bad time to BE married, let alone GET married. 2. I wouldn't be so sure about the time off - maybe they're cooler now than they were when i was there (98/99) but they weren't too supportive at all.... people were resorting to skipping town Friday night, with or...
  35. K

Shore tour options, Masters degrees, and their effects on careers...

you're also an ensign or JG. Unless you literally kill someone, no selection board is really going to care what happens at that point in your career.

    Question for Salty Fighter/Attack Pilots

Now imagine the A-12. Now, live in the now :icon_tong
  37. K

    Question about G-forces

um - all I know is in an F-16 doing 5 bills at the numbers, you'll hit 8 Gs TWICE in the break. I was only expecting the one. The second one hurt.

Any reason to salute with left hand?

A lot less potential for confusion when the plane is still chocked and chained ;)

    Question for Salty Fighter/Attack Pilots

I'm not taking your bet. ;)

    Question for Salty Fighter/Attack Pilots

    Is my sin unforgivable?

Amen. In all seriousness, while there isn't AOCS per se any more, there is OCS. Give it a crack if its what you really want to do.
  42. K

Shore tour options, Masters degrees, and their effects on careers...

and great folks to go drinking with. Not terribly germane, but Meat DID bring up Hook, so it was bound to enter the conversation one way or another.
  43. K

Any reason to salute with left hand?

could have swore he did when doing the whole sideboy thing. well, that's what comes from being in ranks waaaaaay in the back for every retirement and change of command I've ever been to!
  44. K

Shore tour options, Masters degrees, and their effects on careers...

Unfortunately, you are correct. beyond my own personal preferences, I think the argument can be made that the navy is cheating itself on that account, but that's a whole different discussion...
  45. K

Any reason to salute with left hand?

I may not remember entirely correctly, but won't a bosun mate salute left handed while he's doing the whistling bit with the right hand?
  46. K

Shore tour options, Masters degrees, and their effects on careers...

Like TurnandBurn said, I don't mean to come off criticizing your goals. It's good that you know what you want, and I hope you get your command. The navy obviously needs skippers - I'm just not terribly anxious to be one of them. No judgement implied (other than a good natured "better you than...
  47. K

Shore tour options, Masters degrees, and their effects on careers...

One of my mentors now in his XO tour hasn't been out of the cockpit his entire time (though one could make the case he probably wasn't there often as CVW staff and later type-wing staff) - but even he says those days were gone. He was in fact the guy that suggested I get an early masters, which...
  48. K

Shore tour options, Masters degrees, and their effects on careers...

Unfortunately, I think those days are either gone or quickly coming to an end. In it's single minded pursuit to make "well rounded officers" it will be well nigh impossible to get that far without several tours in places I don't want to be.
  49. K

Shore tour options, Masters degrees, and their effects on careers...

(in exasperation to a Navy that doesn't listen to me on this score): See, here's a fellow who's not even winged yet and wants command. If I give him whatever "good boy" points I've acquired over the last 7 years to help him out, can I PLEEEEEAASE have a "professional aviator" path like the RAF...
