    IFS down the tubes?

I think we are mostly missing the main point of IFS. To my understanding, and its name, it was never designed to make the student better. It is purely a screening tool brought by economics, and as was already said, the question is: is it cheaper to send all non-PPL guys to IFS, or is it cheaper...

Pentagon cuts aircraft carrier presence in the Gulf due to budget

..Who needed us (USAF) for a ride to the fight and to get gas while on the way/there. I think that helps the point that our defense spending is what it is because so much of the world lives under a protective blanket paid for by the tax payers of the U.S.

    Which watch?

Hopefully this hasn't already been covered, but my Breitling Airwolf is doing the EOL blink. Any tips on places to get a battery replaced, either near Virginia Beach, or Fallon (Reno)?

New official Command Check in Guidance

This is amazingly epic. At least, to her credit she did list buying a car in her short term goals. A lofty aspiration that everyone in 1930 had. I'm fairly certain that has to be a joke. There is no way someone would voluntarily do that to themselves.

    Marine Hornet RAG

FWIW the RAG tells its studs that "only the Air Force allows single seat FAC(A)"... I've heard it dozens of times, so I could see why MID thought that.

Coast Guard pilot involved in crash to be charged with homicide

The 'inability to challenge' here, and in the VMFAT-101 example, are difficult to speak on unless you are in military (perhaps ATP too? Don't know since I am not in that) aviation. I remember seeing my grandfather this Christmas break (WWII Vet.) and he brought up the 101 mishap, asking why the...

Impressive. I couldn't imagine the USN/USMC doing that.

    VMFAT-101 Update

Reading the article, and the comments makes me wonder how much culturally has changed there. I'll defer to the pros at 101, but their take on mx seems different than the other sea going branch.

    SHARP on MAC

SHARP "needs" internet explorer. I looked into this a while back and decided to just keep using Parallels for that reason. I can get on other CAC required websites on my Mac side, but if I want SHARP I have to use Windows since the highest IE for Mac is too low for SHARP. Unless someone knows...

    MH-60S with a M197 20mm cannon!

Blue Angels - Victims of Budget Cuts?

Maybe we can get the USAF to chip in since everyone thinks they are USAF anyways... Plus, the USAF never seems to be hurting for funds. Maybe we can play nice and they will share? Edit: (Even for the target audience, who know that the Blues are Navy. I am willing to bet a fair amount of USAF...

    T-45C down at Kingsville today

They stopped production a year or two ago. They figured they had enough using some formula of losing like 1 per year, over a certain amount of years until they got the replacement. It seemed silly to me at the time, since more likely the accident rate could/will be higher, and the replacement...

    T-45C down at Kingsville today

I think the T-45C from the Kingsville June 2010 incident is up and flying again. If not, I heard it will be flyable in the near future.

    Inital CQ Vid: F3H-2N, F4D, A4D, F7U

That video is terrifying. I can't believe how big the settles were off the cat. No wonder the accident rate was so high during that time.

Anyone familiar with Belgium (SHARP) or Stuttgart?

Knowing nothing of the working conditions/job quality issues mentioned: I would second the above, not having worked at either, I'd rather be in Stuttgart (living condition wise). Cheap flights to most of Europe are available from there too.

Anyone familiar with Belgium (SHARP) or Stuttgart?

To live or visit? Been to both a few times. I really like both, but it depends what you are looking for. For living both can be a bit cold, with Belgium probably slightly being the colder/more rainy of the two. Stuttgart is a younger crowd in an older city. There is a fairly large college there...

F18EF Hydraulic/Systems Question re: Landing Gear

Likely the forces placed on the gear (side loading) didn't allow the planing link to lock in to place and allow both gear to lock out. As soon as that side load stopped, or there was enough positive g (or both), it locked out. The gear was only extended for the dirty roll, so he then raised the...

    Airspeed Restriction Below "B"

As much as I get the whole make fun of the pointy nose guys for trying to hard thing... I think it is more descriptive than saying "reduce the power". Since there are lots of throttle positions that are 'reduced' but not midrange. Standing the throttle up applies to a loosely specific power...

    Airspeed Restriction Below "B"

Standing the throttles up is just that: The throttle is \ at idle, | mid range, / mil.
  26. R

    Airspeed Restriction Below "B"

My understanding for the airspeed waiver is also for nose visibility. At 250 knots the nose is parked up higher than it is at 300 kts. At least that what was told to me in Fams. Clearly, Lemoore isn't class B but unless specifically requested to slow, I wouldn't think of being at 200 clean, and...

    Yet More From Iran...

Looking at the wikipedia page (take that for what it is worth) of the Iranian Navy. It looks like they might have three Frigates that could make the journey. Obviously, that leaves them with nothing at home, and certainly that's a long way away from home for not very large ships.

Space Available AMC/MAC, and NALO flights

I managed to make it work out once before, but it seems the available info for Space A, AMC/MAC, and NALO flights is like pulling teeth. I was a junior in high school. The first tower was hit just before I was going to get up. Went to class and watched the rest there as most of the classes left the news on to watch as...

    KC Airshow Crash

Maybe I have ridiculous expectations, but those reaction times in the videos I've seen posted recently disappoint me. It's not like it's 3 am at a small regional airport. It's an airshow with demos currently in progress. If it was a low impact crash, but enough to knock him out, he would have...

    CORTRAMID West T-34 flight

Ok, I give up. It's actually a conspiracy, as always, to hold the poor Marines back from anything that could be considered a good deal or fun. Like the bad deal that is Miramar, or Camp Pendleton. Edit: Geez, I almost forgot, the F-35B is primarily responsible for the fiasco that is the JSF...

    CORTRAMID West T-34 flight

My two cents on the T-34 low safe thing, without this turning into a penis size measuring contest. Since the Harrier is so specifically A/G, they train to it all the time, there is a higher level of proficiency associated with the risk of CFIT. The Hornet community, has the same risk (nose...

    Type of camera while deployed?

I have a Sony HX5v (which has been updated since I got it). Good photo quality, 10x zoom, good HD video, a GPS/compass to tag the photos where they were taken (pretty cool feature for traveling). The newer version would certainly be worth looking into. IMO the best 'pocket' sized camera is the...

    F-22 Grounded

^ Emply plenum, right? I don't think it actually can detect the quality (which is the issue), but I'm not sure since I mostly fly LOX. Either way, yes, flow on, mask off, you'll pop a caution/warning for it.

F-35B/C Lightning II (Joint Strike Fighter)

The rectangular box just above the rudder (below the RWR/nav light/etc) is the exit for the fuel dump. The intake is outboard on both rudders, same height just further forward.

F-35B/C Lightning II (Joint Strike Fighter)

I also saw a F-35A w/ Viper in a trail about 2 months ago. They seem to fly them pretty often. That or Joshua REALLY cares about telling everyone they are out there (probably good since I doubt I'll get a brick on it anyways).

F/A-18E vs F... benefits of one over the other?

10,600 and 10,800 in Mil. 16,000 and 18,000 in Max. The big difference would be the extra 4,000 lbs of total thrust in MAX. If the plane is low on weight (A++ especially), you can get over 1:1 easily.
