Navy Now Taking High School Dropouts

    Huh??
  2. J

Navy Now Taking High School Dropouts

You bring up an interesting point, Chuck. During the wars of the 20th century, I thought only the army drafted and if you had to enlist to get into the other services. Are you saying that during Vietnam, the Marines drafted civilians?

Navy Now Taking High School Dropouts

Is this not bad news for the navy? https://apnews.com/article/navy-recruiting-high-school-diploma-89b9ff047556bc0d5c54fe074410b700 Why did the Marines meet its quota, but the navy did not? I assume this does not mean that officer standards will be any lower, correct?

    Flags of Our Fathers

Yes, I want to watch that one next. Thanks.

    Flags of Our Fathers

Thanks. Admittedly, I have not read either book. Perhaps they are worth checking out.

    Flags of Our Fathers

This story is a tad old, but here it goes anyway: The other day I watched Flags of Our Fathers for the first time. The movie was filmed in 2006 and directed by none of other than Clint Eastwood. The movie was based on a book authored by James Bradley, the son of John Bradley, the navy...

Is It Possible To Take Academic Summer Classes While Doing PTC or NROTC?

Thanks. Good to know that you were able to do both the class and the cruise over the summer.

Thanks for the info. What unit is this, please?

Great replies and info. Thanks much.

Is It Possible To Take Academic Summer Classes While Doing PTC or NROTC?

What if you have a difficult major that would require summer classes to graduate in 4 years? In that case, would be better to concentrate on the academics, getting the best GPA possible, graduate on time, and then go to OCS rather than the PLC/NROTC route? But, do NROTC students have a better...

Is it True That More Officers Entering Flight Training Today Will Fly Drones Rather Than Jets?

So, everyone else who gets wings after that will only be qualified to fly drones, I imagine.

    Growler "Golden Path"

Great info. How does this track compare to an Air Force flying career, as far as you know? Thanks.

So, do some pilots who fly manned aircraft may fly drones as well:?:

Is it True That More Officers Entering Flight Training Today Will Fly Drones Rather Than Jets?

If this is true for Air Force, will it also be true for Navy?

Does Air Force Fly More Than Navy?

It seems like after your first flying tour in the navy, one becomes a flight instructor, then a disassociated squadron tour, where one serves on a ship, but does not fly. How many other flying opportunities are there in the navy after such a tour? Does anyone know if Air Force flies more, or...

    USNA vs ROTC vs OCS

Thanks. I recall reading Eugene Cernan's autbiography (Cernan was the last man to walk on the Moon and was a Naval Aviator commissioned via ROTC) in which he stated that when he was in the navy, only academy grads made flag rank. Of course, I realize that making flag rank is nearly impossible...

    USNA vs ROTC vs OCS

So, is true that Annapolis graduates tend to have a significant leg up on a naval career compared to officers commissioned via ROTC or OCS?

    Is SWO Really That Bad?

    Thanks, Nevar.
  21. J

    Is SWO Really That Bad?

Got it. And, aviators do not need to stay on a ship for 24 hours while in port like some SWO officers do? Yes, being in charge an expensive aircraft is a big deal, to say the least.
  22. J

    Is SWO Really That Bad?

Thanks, Brew. When you say 'stand duty', is that standing watch for hours at a time? I am of the understanding that even a SWO ensign is in charge of a division of sailors. As JG or full LT aviator, are you in charge of any sailors at all? If the answer is no, perhaps the whole 'leadership...

    Is SWO Really That Bad?

Thanks, Renegade. Happy holidays. Thanks. What is RO, please? If the nuke path seems to be restricted and fraught with risks, why do people do it?
  24. J

    Is SWO Really That Bad?

I see a lot of negative comments about SWO here. I get that different groups or even branches of the military like to poke each other for fun. But, is being a SWO really a horrible life? Is it worth it to go SWO if you simply want to gain leadership experience at an early age and just do 4 or...

    Who Drives an Aircraft Carrier?

    Thanks, Brew
  26. J

    Who Drives an Aircraft Carrier?

How long is the disassociated tour? Two years? Won't an aviator get rusty if he/she does not fly for two whole years? Is there any chance to fly during that time? Can the disassociated tours at least be fun and/or interesting? What kind of jobs do aviators do on a ship when not flying?
  27. J

    Who Drives an Aircraft Carrier?

Someone mentioned that an aviator earned a SWO pin during a disassociated tour. So, is this a sear tour when an aviator does not fly? If so, why don't they fly? If they don't fly, does it not make sense to learn to drive a ship during this tour and earn that SWO pin if they might command a...
  28. J

    Who Drives an Aircraft Carrier?

Got ya, Pags. Your response makes sense. And, besides, carriers travel with other ships anyway, correct, such as DDG or CG? But, if aviators learn to drive ships anyway, why don't also get the SWO pin along the way?
  29. J

    Who Drives an Aircraft Carrier?

Thanks, Brett. Does a career naval aviator learn enough about surface warfare material on the way to becoming a carrier xo and co to learn to give the "driving" commands? I am curious as to how specialized or complicated surface warfare officer training can be if a naval aviator can...
  30. J

    Who Drives an Aircraft Carrier?

If the CO of a carrier is an aviator, who actually drives the ship? Is the XO an aviator as well, or a SWO officer? If SWO COs command destroyers and cruisers, why don't they command carriers as well? Are he carrier CO and the CAG peers, or does the CAG report to the carrier CO? Thanks.
  31. J

Congrats to LT. Swegle (aka Charles Edward never-ending question thread)

No, seriously what do officers do on the day to day as they wait for training? Isn't this a big waste for both the officers and the navy?
  32. J

Congrats to LT. Swegle (aka Charles Edward never-ending question thread)

Why was she removed? She looks pretty hot. https://airshowstuff.com/v4/tag/capt-zoe-kotnik/

CO of USS Theodore Roosevelt makes quite the statement.

Why was Captain Crozier fired? For telling the truth?

    Height and Aircraft

I figured it was a joke. So, is 6'3" or 6'4" possible for the F-18? Generally, no, I assume? Have folks here met jet pilots that tall?
  35. J

    Surface Warfare Officer......is it rewarding?

Funny post...particularly in the Downfall reference. I recall that scene very well.
  36. J

    Height and Aircraft

Was the chap who ejected from the Prowler unusually tall for a pilot?
  37. J

    Height and Aircraft

I see that the tallest astronaut, Jim Wetherbee, was 6'4" and flew the F 18. How the heck did he fit into the cockpit? He probably wouldn't be an astronaut today since he most likely wouldn't fit into the Soyuz to get to the International Space station.
  38. J

    Height and Aircraft

And, couldn't you also qualify for helos? Doesn't that count as a second pipeline?
  39. J

    Height and Aircraft

Thanks for the info, man. Sorry to read about the disqualification. I thought 6'2" would be a cinch for any craft, including fighters. I guess it really does come down to those anthro measurements. So, what are your plans now as far as the Navy?

Do Carrier COs and XOs Fly?

I can see what one of the posters Thanks. I wonder if that is awkward to have instructors that are junior in rank? I was not aware that admirals could still fly. Would they actually fly in a combat situation? Or, would that be unheard of/too risky?
  44. J

Do Carrier COs and XOs Fly?

Great info..thanks. I guess, for the most part, and excluding some exceptions, an aviators flying career if effectively over if they get chosen for the XO carrier route? It sounds like the DCAG/CAG route is the last flying gig for an aviator? And, when going to nuke school to learn...
  45. J

Do Carrier COs and XOs Fly?

Thanks for all the responses. So, it seem that most COs and XOs can fly if they want to. Is it considered a faux pas if they, however? I see some comments that allude to the fact that such flying cuts into the flying time of junior aviators. And, when the CO does fly, does he fly under the...
  46. J

Do Carrier COs and XOs Fly?

Or, do they simply drive and otherwise lead the ship? I understand that the CAG is also an 0-6 like the CO of the carrier. But, is it correct to say that the CAG flies regularly while the CO does not, despite the fact that the CO is an aviator as well. And, does the CO have an equal...

    Height and Aircraft

Yeah, thanks. What I found that V = Fixed Wing F = Fighter A = Attack But, how the heck does V stand for fixed wing? Is that a early 20th century Navy tradition or something?
