    Consolidated Advice for Primary

My work/life balance in Primary worked fairly well (I like to think so, anyways). Friday nights were off to party, Saturdays were always for the boys. Either went shooting, to the beach, rode my bike, watched football, whatever. Sundays, I got up and lounged and went to church at 11. Got home at...

If I'd never been to Pensacola, I'd laugh at my own stupidity, but I've been out to Cantonment and to Bagdad and those places make P'cola look like South Beach.

    IFS affecting future learning

The single biggest takeaway from IFS is going to be learning the sight picture for a 3 degree glideslope on a civilian box-pattern final at 70 KIAS so that you remember when you see it doing 120+ KIAS rolling out from a Navy overhead pattern. You'll get a crash course in comms and federal...

Best Way to Improve Push-up Score

That Stew Smith program works. I use his TRX and Push/Pull workouts to great effect. My IST at OCS was 50 pushups, just enough to pass. I almost maxed it out at 80 during my out PFA, and I haven't had a PFA below 75 since.

Hey AW, I know many of you guys are helo pilots, and some of you were/are HT IPs. I'm in Advance Pool right now, just looking for some direction as far as what to prepare for in Advanced. I've gotten my digital copies of the material from book issue but I'm looking for direction as far as where...

A Word on OCS (as of 2 DEC 16)

My dude, You're still a long way out, but good on you for working out. Much can change from our OCS experience by the time you arrive. For me, running was self paced outside the PFA. Don't suck and you'll be fine.

For the record, I had everything that my surgeon had provided after my cystoscopy, and NAMI still requested records from my urologist. My training jacket literally has four copies of the same sheets of paper because I brought two, NHCNE made one and then requested another. I'm agreeing that it's...

To add on to what you mentioned about the lack of effectiveness of other methods, there's somewhat of a cyclical nature to the prescription of opioid based pain relievers. Usually for a period of about a decade, someone gets the bright idea that reducing opioid prescription can reduce...

I didn't have any of this stuff. Not a factor. Week one, you'll go to the Naval Health Clinic and they'll take all kinds of blood and tests, as well as the dental clinic. They'll make you a new dental record for the Navy, take some x-rays. They even fixed a pre-cavity for me. With your blood...

These days you show up to graduation with your rank on, but without your cover until after the ceremony. We didn't have a pinning ceremony, we just got sworn in. Indeed. Within the first three weeks. You'll mostly wear NWUs in that span. Your uniforms will most likely be baggy close to commission. They usually aren't baggy six months later, I'm not saying you'll balloon but most will gain some weight again once they go back to eating like a human. Do not get...

I arrived at 2300 the night before coming from MDT. Everyone will be tired regardless of the time change. I spent the previous year waking up at 0530 and working out, so I adjusted very quickly. Once you've had all the fun of being woken up for weeks during indoc, waking up is no issue.

We started with somewhere around 46, had 1 DOR (for a DQ) and several roll out and roll in, but everyone else that started in aviation got to stay... which is pretty rare. You'll wear issued glasses until Candio phase. I recommend bringing contacts if you have them because you'll need them for the fire trainer and you might want them for the M9 pistol course. During candio, you can wear contacts all the time if you like.

They're required by NAMI to start flying. The MEPS physical you get isn't a flight physical, just a Navy physical. Those waivers are different. You'll get a long form flight physical the week you show up at OCS. The waivers will be assessed from there. I lost 25 lbs. Other people didn't lose...

True story. Incredibly, our class (14-16) was able to commission with only a few transitioning from SNA to SNFO, but everyone in aviation got to stay in aviation, and that doesn't happen very often. Even so, there were like 2 of the 31 of us that were SNA/SNFO who didn't require some kind of...

I'm almost positive the NEX Uniform shop carries awards for all branches. You'll need to figure out which ones are authorized for wear in Navy uniforms. Your parachutist badge should get stitched on when your nametape does, just make sure that the NEX knows that you need it.

Sending phone cards in the mail

Landlines on the quarterdeck require you to use phone cards until you get your cell. The current technique is to use a phone card, dial out, and have someone call you back so you only use ~1 min on an 800 min card and there are cards at each phone. But to your (sarcastic) question, I had a...
