    1/C summer cruise options

Or you can go for something completely different. I know I wanted to go aviation, so I requested a foreign exchange cruise. The exchange that NROTC does with the JMSDF was a blast and I'd highly recommend it. Aviation cruises are kind of a waste of time...only fly a few times and there isn't...

I've always used www.budsgunshop.com as my standard for prices. I try to reference how much it would cost me to get it from there when dealing with the local shops....has worked pretty well so far. I've shot an full size XD 45 and loved it. Springfield keeps adding new stuff to the XD line...

    Army Vision Requirements for flying

I have some family friends asking me about the Army's vision standards for being a pilot. Any of you fine forum members have any insight on this subject? The person I'm doing the research for already wears glasses. Do you have to be 20/20 or have been surgically corrected to 20/20 to be...

Flying Warrant: A success or failure?

Yet again, you glossed over my point. I said that night BROWNOUT was more scary, a pad isn't. That said, I won't minimize getting the Sierra safely on deck of a small boy. I've been in the world of having the tailwheel closer in so it's going to be an interesting transition for myself come this...

Flying Warrant: A success or failure?

This is exactly my point. Things overlap, so adding more tools to the toolbox by learning more missions is a good thing. The SWTP syllabus forces you to get into the pubs and prepare for more dynamic things and flex to certain situations. VERTREP, as wlawr says, is a daily thing and doesn't...

Flying Warrant: A success or failure?

Well if you have guys that are unsafe at the boat, then that's a bigger issue. HSC (exp or cvw) isn't going to be all VERTREP and SAR anymore, and we have to train to that. If you build your flying abilities around dynamic training events, whether it's night terf, HVBSS, ASU etc it makes you a...

Getting your name painted on squadron aircraft

You'll have more pilots/aircrew than spots for names....so you have to move up in the world to get your name on a bird. At least plan on this for a multi-crewed community. Took me 18 months to get my name on an aircraft.
  9. NozeMan

    How are NFO/Pilots paired?

You fly the aircraft maintenance provides you, if it has your name on it, luck you. I fly with whoever the flight schedule says I fly with, be it with the CO/XO, a DH, another aircraft commander senior to me, or the nugget in the squadron.

    When to graduate / commission?

Dude, stay and get a full senior year out of it. Life just gets harder after college, believe it. If you can space out your classes and potentially do better academically, that's never a bad thing. Maybe you don't go to school in a fun place, in that case graduate early. I went to school...

    1/C Aviation Cruise Billets

Getting a helo squadron isn't even a guarantee, we had middies all summer (4 sets), and not one mid got a ride in the front because we used all our hours and flights on workups. We got them rides in the back, but that was about it. One managed to bum a ride of the our CAG's Prowler squadron...

    1/C Aviation Cruise Billets

If you know you want to be a pilot, I wouldn't even ask for an aviation cruise. I knew well in advance that I wanted aviation, so I chose to take a unique cruise instead (Foreign Exchange w/ the JMSDF). Request the most exotic cruise you can get or the coolest location (i.e. overseas). I had...

Guidance in becoming a Naval Aviatior

    1. No, not all helo aviators are trained in CSAR and ASW. It will depend on the mission set of your specific community/squadron. 2. I am a Naval Aviator, therefore I went to SERE. 3. Yes, I fly in pitch dark all the time. Oddly enough a helicopter flies the same, day or night....

This is great advice. I watched the launch from the bridge that was 1/4 mile away from there and it was fantastic. You could actually see the launch pad and everything without and obstructions.

My Latest Purchase (or just pictures of your current guns)

This is why I ended up with the Kimber. It was between a Kimber Custom II or a Springfield Armory Loaded. For the same price, the SA had night sights over the Kimber, that was it. The fit and finish of the SA doesn't even compare to the Kimber, not even close. I also was kind of turned off to...

I was actually in the store to get the blued Custom II, but ended up with the stainless. I like how Kimber's stainless models aren't as "shiny" as some other brands. The gun is definitely more accurate than I am. Hopefully I can put a few more rounds through it tomorrow. So far it's ran great...

Last Tango in AW Land (Lifestyle questions from prospective SNFO)

Brother, if you were stressed out and unhappy in college, flight school and Naval Aviation might be pretty eye opening for you. College was a joke compared to flight school. The fleet makes flight school look easy. I assure you it doesn't get any easier, but it does get more rewarding. When...

Where do carriers get helos to cover CQ and other at sea periods sans Air Wing

  35. NozeMan

Where do carriers get helos to cover CQ and other at sea periods sans Air Wing

It's not necessarily from the air wing's helo squadron. For example, this past CQ period on Truman an HSC squadron covered the VTs at the boat. That way the helo squadron from Truman's air wing didn't have to go up and cover it. Bottom line, they'll take an helo squadron that's available to...

T-6B Texan II at Whiting next week?

This probably won't even be an issue. The TH-57 has VOR, TACAN, ILS, ADF, and GPS capability--more than the T-34 or T-6 has to offer in terms of avionics. The HTs are moving in the direction of MFDs when they start upgrading the birds to the -57D. Besides, when switching from fixed wing to a...

    Tipsy Gypsy Leather Patches

Didn't mean to come off as harsh. But the generic style of nametag that has the stamped gold lettering is meant for flight suits. The gold will wear off, etc, definitely wouldn't want that on a nice leather. I think I'll be going the route of TG, the new JOs in my squadron are putting...
