Burned Out: The National Commission on Military Aviation Safety

TLDR; On 1 Dec a report to the President and Congress was published about why military aircrew are burned out and how this affects retention and safety. A lot of useful stuff in here for leaders, ASOs, or anyone needing data. https://www.militaryaviationsafety.gov/ (There is a previous post...

Monster Marine OCS thread: stupid questions answered here!

As I understand it, there is no age limit for flight school. The commissioning age limit is the one to worry about.

    All things MV-22 Osprey

The 44's are glass. Osprey selects will be flying the TC-12s which are still steam gauges. The only reason we'll do multi engine is for CRM anyways. As nice as it is to get a free multi engine rating, I agree it doesn't seem like the most efficient way to get that training.

    All things MV-22 Osprey

Yeah I selected a few weeks ago and I've heard the same thing. I think FY16 guys will stay with the current pipeline and after October they'll make the switch. Or at least that's what the 2ndLt underground is alluding to. Sounds like a really short pipeline for them, but at least we'll get some...

    Ospreys vs Rotors

Before there is too much violence and bloodshed, I'd like to set the background for this question. In two days I'll be finishing Primary putting in my selection preferences. For the life of me I cannot break the tie between Ospreys or Rotors in my mind. Every helicopter pilot I talk to says the...

    Courses between OCS and TBS

Just an update, OSO got me on a volunteer list for Alpha in October, it looks like theyre trying to push through the waitlist backup

That's a good point, just getting a little stir crazy I guess. Projected looks like 10 months total

    Courses between OCS and TBS

Those of us who took the PLC route are enjoying decent wait time between OCS and TBS. A few guys I went to OCS with managed to find their way into other courses in the meantime, Fire Support Coordination and the MCAP instructor course for example. Does anyone know how one would find out about...

I believe you are, I was just there today visiting a friend who checked in early for the 02 Sept class, she was put in Graves.

    2015 TBS Dates/Co.

Really? Awesome, that's fast man! I'm getting told to expect March 2015 now

    2015 TBS Dates/Co.

Just got word from my OSO that due to an unforeseen mountain of paperwork glitches, I should probably expect to hit TBS around January 2015. I tried looking up to see what TBS classes were starting in Jan/Feb/March but I can't find anything after FY 14. Anyone know of anything?

Military College Graduate looking to go OCS

It won't help but I wouldn't say it's a dealbreaker. Slots are getting pretty few and far between, but those extracurriculars will help immensely. The competition and number off slots available differ per region, so talk with your OSO ASAP and get a package in. After you get selected, GPA...

Age and health restrictions USMC wannabe pilot

I can almost guarantee that PFT score, or lack therof, is part of the issue. Go out and run one yourself and record it. Show the OST that you are physically capable of OCS. They dont want to wast time sending someone who wont be able to keep up. That distance doesnt help, I'll give you that...

Age and health restrictions USMC wannabe pilot

What are your ASTB/PFT scores? -If you don't mind me asking Marine OSO's are a little different in my experience. If they think you're a lost cause they'll just stop answering (At least on the West Coast). Prove them otherwise. They don't care about promises or small progress, they deal only in...

Age and health restrictions USMC wannabe pilot

Be a stud, mentally and physically. Show them you're worth the effort. Nail a high ASTB score and a 280/290 PFT and they'll probably be ready to hook you up. Also keep an open dialogue with your OSO, let them know early on that's what you need. They should be the ones who submit these waivers.

Age and health restrictions USMC wannabe pilot

After seeing the views to replies ratio on this thread I figured someone should give it a shot. Abnormal something or other: I don't know the technicalities of that kind of waiver, but I will say that most things are waiver-able if the condition isn't going to affect you in the field. Age...

    Math skills for pilots?

I believe current contracts are 6 years after winging (so basically 8), both pilots and NFOs (They changed them around in 2009)

    Marine PLC Juniors breakdown

I think some things changed with the new commands, when did you go through Jrs? I was 1st inc in 2012. At that time juniors did a 4 and a 6, while seniors do a 6, 9, and 12.

    Marine PLC Juniors breakdown

Yes sir. I might have been conservative with the weight- it was closer to 70+ when I first went but last year they started removing some weight due the number of hip fractures. At Seniors the longest hike is 12-miles w/ ~65 lbs. The terrain/heat and compounding effects of 5-9 weeks of OCS make...

    Marine PLC Juniors breakdown

Juniors is basically breaking you down and teaching you how to crawl. They're not trying especially hard to drop people (though they will), but it's more like a haze-fest/introduction. Be loud, be fast, and do exactly what you're told, and you'll be ok. It's easier than seniors, but in my...

    Mameluke Sword - Brands

That has definitely crossed my mind. I felt a little conceited, but at the same time I know that I would definitely have been stoked if my Grandad/Dad had something like that passed down through the generations. What kind of engravings have people had done? Just Name/Date usually? By the way...

    Mameluke Sword - Brands

Haha good point sir. Worst case I think I could find a use for an extra sword. By the way I heard you may not pass TBS inspection if you have your sword engraved, do you know if that's true or just an old policy?

    Mameluke Sword - Brands

Good Morning everyone, I had a quick question about the Mameluke sword. I graduated OCS last July and will be commissioning this May. I'm looking at ordering my Mameluke sword from Marlow White, they seem pretty legitimate. http://www.militarysabers.com/marine-officer-sword-certified.html Its...

28 is the cutoff, waivers usually aren't difficult to acquire, as long as your OSO thinks you're worth the trouble.

some info on the PLC and OCC of the marine corp

I can tell you that selection for OCS is EXTREMELY competitive with the recent cuts. You'll need around a 290 pft minimum. Were you asking if you could be an officer while working on your degree? No, you must have a 4-year degree to be a military officer (excluding warrant). If you're...
