NEWS SWA 737 Engine Failure - Diverts to PNS

Since Southwest doesn't have a certification/engineering division that is directly overseen by the FAA, whichever companies involved (engine overhauler, airline) would be expected to directly cooperate with the NTSB. I can't speak for any inspectors, investigators that may be doing certificate...

New Bell 525 reporting 200 knots?

News update from the office of Ron Burgundy's DFW branch: The speed reported above 200 kts was in a shallow dive. Bell is still working to determine VNE for the aircraft.

New Bell 525 reporting 200 knots?

Yeah the practical use has been a big question mark in the office, Bell likes to take a flashy marketing approach. The FBW controls in the cockpit are for the most part derived from the V-22. EASA and the Transport Canada dudes/and girl tore into the aircraft design/methodology/what have you...

New Bell 525 reporting 200 knots?

The office I work in is the responsible certifying authority for the FAA in certifying the Bell 525. It is most definitely an interesting program to be involved with. I believe the 200 kt figure is in level flight. It is most likely one of Bell's top priorities as they've relied heavily on...

Agreed, I was too hard on the kid at a critical time in his training. Big mistake on my part.

Point taken. Jabrado don't listen to anything I said. Press hard and don't' give up

    Frustrated, airsick, and miserable.

I have an engineering degree as well, and I may have had the same aspirations that he had as well at some point. But by reading his post it seemed firsthand that he got the engineering degree because he wanted to be an astronaut and/or flyer, not because he wanted to be an engineer.

    Frustrated, airsick, and miserable.

You know you're right to call me out on that. I was trying to figure out what his motivations are based on his completion of his engineering degree.

    Frustrated, airsick, and miserable.

Not to be a dick here, but how did you get past your commissioning program? Judging by the fact you said midshipman my guess is NROTC. You have an engineering degree, awesome. But are you really trying to emulate an astronaut just because you have a fascination, I'm confused on that part. I...

    Officer first pilot second

I saw a lot of guys who didn't appear to be "officer material" at OCS. But guess what… they made it and I didn't, and many of them are proving to be very successful in their respective pipelines. Some got the NAMI whammy and didn't commission, and some had to go from pilot to NFO. Sh*t...

More restricted use H-60's for civilian use coming soon

I may be able to answer some questions regarding that. The rotorcraft directorate is close to my office, which probably handled that TC validation process.

The Doctor is in! Ask a Flight Surgeon!

Don't get me wrong you can choose to do whatever you like. I'm just trying to see if it's even worth your time unless you can get some sort of consultation from NAMI before shipping out to Newport. The ways things have been going now NAMI has been rejecting people coming out of OCS. I would...

The Doctor is in! Ask a Flight Surgeon!

Hate to say this but NavyOffRec raises a good point. Any history of insomnia would prove to be detrimental in the OCS training environment. You can chose to proceed to try and override the NPQ with some meddocs but odds are if they caught it at this point flight surgeon would raise eyebrows...

Chances to get selected for Officer Commission

Unfortunately you went to Berkeley, so you don't qualify. Econ from Berkeley too. What's the field of study... Keynesian economics only...? ^Joke inserted.
  17. RiseR 25

    Contingent Commission?

That almost sounds like the Navy is taking a huge gamble by accepting packets before graduation. Maybe it's changed since I applied. With PLC I can see that because the program has more flexibility. The OCS timetable at Newport is fairly inflexible and you must definitely have a degree before...

    Computer Science and Aviation

Well come on down back to the Sun Coast man! You'll be fine man, you're thinking way more ahead than I did at your age. Big aerospace is cool and all but I think you may be surprised at how slave labor driven it can get some times. But your choice man if it's what you want to do go for it...

Chris, What do you ultimately want to do? Not to scare you off but some of the software/flight test engineers I've met who've worked defense projects have said FML. Are you looking for schools with NROTC programs right now? Good Luck

    NAVAIR Engineering Job Opportunities

I would highly recommend these postings for any accredited engineers out there who either were non-select for the boards or had NAMI Whammies preventing them from flying. Thanks Maxsonic!

Navy OCS pilot candidate age waiver [from October aviation boards]

What MIDNJAC said. You're applying to be an officer in the Navy and a student Naval Aviator. Hate to break this to you but I would stow the PhD stuff before going to Newport, I know a few DIs and Class CPOs who would have a field day if they found out one of their pilot OCs was a PhD student...

    OCS Holiday Routine 2014

Wow that's rather odd. 14 December falls on a Sunday so it looks like you might be in for that week doing the medical Monday-Friday/in processing during that week then go to leave periods. That really doesn't make any sense. They might have changed it from last year.

    OCS Holiday Routine 2014

The guy that quit when he returned from leave ultimately decided he did not want to serve as an officer, he already liked his enlisted career in the Navy. If we are in fact talking about the same person. He also had a medical test that would not have been favorable with NAMI. Had nothing to...

    OCS Holiday Routine 2014

Right, financially it is better to stay on the base. I guess my point didn't come across. PM me if you want to know why it's not a good idea. Just trying to add to the discussion because I was part of the class last year that had this exact same issue.
  34. RiseR 25

    OCS Holiday Routine 2014

Staying on the base might also not be a good option. You will be put to work if you choose to stay. The ones that took both weeks last year were very refreshed when they came back. I'd say it depends on the person.

Congratulations triplej88!! Good luck in Newport!
  36. RiseR 25

The Doctor is in! Ask a Flight Surgeon!

As far as your question goes for the waiting periods they are pretty inflexible. I had PRK which was a 6 month waiting period. Officer Recruiter wouldn't even send me to MEPS until 6 months after the procedure.
  37. RiseR 25

The Doctor is in! Ask a Flight Surgeon!

It looks like the primary concern of the docs is the fact that you are experiencing kidney stones at such a young age. Dealing with N3M while knowing the NAMI waiver standards can be extremely frustrating, but unfortunately they are almost entirely different worlds when it comes to the medical...

Air Force giving me chance to jump ship to Navy

Makes sense. I was looking at it from the perspective that he had already completed at least some type of indoc, and that by completing field training the military was very committed to letting you commission, but granted that was the accepted standpoint of the Air Force, not the Navy...

NPQ From Flight due to Personality Traits

And that is ultimately most likely it is the way it is right now. Between Fort Hood, Sandy Hook, there was something in Quantico as well, and Navy yard, I can't say I blame NAMI or anyone at NHCNE for erring on the side of caution.

NPQ From Flight due to Personality Traits

Ok, I'm sorry, but whatever happened to being a little bit childish and impatient??!! I always found that to be an extremely good quality on my part to accelerate my learning curve when I go flying, as well as my motivation to becoming a rocket scientist (ME major). This looks to me like...

Air Force giving me chance to jump ship to Navy

The way it's looking to me right now based on how AFPC works, guys/gals on scholarship would be given the option to "rush" the Guard and Reserve units that are currently needing pilots/navs/ABMs and any non-rated jobs that need to be manned. If they don't make the cut for that unit's board...
  43. RiseR 25

Air Force giving me chance to jump ship to Navy

Ah, I see now what you mean. I was thinking more along the angle of the Air Force Guard and Reserves officer accession process and more specifically their pilot selection process. Guard and Reserve units have the pilot billets (AFSCs), but limited means to secure the officers. They used to...

Air Force giving me chance to jump ship to Navy

Good article and nice to finally see the Air Force doing something that makes sense with regards to giving AFROTC commissionees the option to go straight Guard of Reserves, I wish they had this 7 years ago.
  45. RiseR 25

Air Force giving me chance to jump ship to Navy

Go Reserves or Guard. If at all possible finish AFROTC and work with your Det Staff to get you a commission in the Reserves or Guard. If you want Navy ask to finish the program and cross-commission if they'll even allow it. Use the fact that you went to field training to justify that you've...

Don't worry about question number 5. Its not a question of percentage of jets but rather your performance and the needs of Naval Aviation.

Have you thought about NROTC at Embry-Riddle? I knew a guy who went College Program there and had his freshman year retroactively payed for by a Navy Scholarship the next year.
