Overall that's good news. None of the traditional helo disassociated tours sound appealing so this might be worth the pursuit!

    Online Masters

@AllYourBass do you know when in a JO's career FSEP is authorized? Can it be in place of a dissociated tour? Also what makes someone competitive for the program?

The Doctor is in! Ask a Flight Surgeon!

I had childhood asthma and can share my experience. I was familiar with the NAMI waiver process and went ahead with getting the PFT and MCT done before OCS. The tests were complete at a naval hospital, but no waiver in hand yet. Fast forward 11 months and I'm sitting at medical in OCS and the...

    O-4/DH Selection vs 2FOS

Ouch. Awesome. I'm glad that worked out for you, I'm hoping for the same luck with my detailer and front office.

    O-4/DH Selection vs 2FOS

Thanks Brett. That makes sense and I'd be happy to take a hit on my ranking if that helps someone else get a set of orders they want.

    O-4/DH Selection vs 2FOS

I'm in this unique situation and am curious how this conversation usually pans out with the detailer or front office. I have orders for my shore tour that take me right to 11 months until MSR and would like to extend where I'm at until my contract expires. From what I understand, orders are...

SELRES Prior Enlisted Pay After Commissioning

PSD should know how to do this but at the end of the day its your pay, and every servicemember should take the time to understand what they are eligible for. At some point in your career your pay, or maybe one of your sailor's pay, is going to get royally screwed up. No one is going to care as...

    USN HT's a calamity

I agree with the second method as well, ever since we started briefing the abbreviated way you get the dirtiest looks from old crusty pilots and crew chiefs.

    USN HT's a calamity

Is it non-standard to brief CMI's during NATOPS in the Romeo community? HSC is supposed to start going away from reciting EP's during a NATOPS brief. A critique from a brief I had with the Skipper was "good job reciting the EP's in the brief but we should all know that stuff, let's focus on...

The Great, Constantly Changing Picture Gallery...part DEUX

If you plan to ditch over the water, you are supposed to open the back doors and jettison the front windows to aid with egress. It helps by equalizing the water pressure inside the cabin so you can get the F out, otherwise, you are trying to push a door against a wall of water.

Helo Community/ Flying in the Civilian World

This is why firefighters stay on unemployment instead of accepting any job that comes their way, the pay does not compare or its outside their career field. In comparison to what most of us are used to the pay is low, but it is much higher than most jobs that are willing to hire you, knowing...

Helo Community/ Flying in the Civilian World

Hate to break it to you but that is pretty standard for the fire service, more specifically on the forestry side of things. The majority of Cal Fire and USFS employees do this because its great for the younger guys to knock out training, volunteer at their local fire station, improve their...

Ground Effect and Translational Lift at the same time?

Having a measurable value that you can read in the cockpit makes more sense...I guess one could argue that all you need to do is take the rad alt's reading +10. A favorite "gotcha" question the HT IP's liked to ask was "where is IGE measured from?" which is why that stuck out to me on the diagram.

Ground Effect and Translational Lift at the same time?

Thanks for posting those @IKE. Why does the OGE chart have gear height on the left side vs rotor height in agl?
  26. BleedGreen

Ground Effect and Translational Lift at the same time?

@busdriver staying low during a max gross weight takeoff until 50KIAS to stay out of the avoid range on the HV diagram made the "why we do this" click. @IKE Thanks for the explanation, I felt the dismissal of one effect for the other, as explained by some of our ground school instructors, was...

Ground Effect and Translational Lift at the same time?

Thanks for the resource but I didn't see anything that references how the two phenomena relate, i.e. both being possible at the same time, unless I'm missing something.

Ground Effect and Translational Lift at the same time?

Do we have any aerodynamic experts that can explain whether or not you can have the benefits of ground effect and translational lift at the same time? So my understanding of ground effect is that it provides a more efficient rotor system by dissipating rotor tip vortices that would normally...

Iran Detains 10 U.S. Navy Personnel

SERE has added other scenarios to its curriculum within the past 10-15 years that covers gray areas such as being detained by a hostile government during peacetime, and also being held in a hostage situation.

Although he was not a POW, he was a detainee which has it's own rules and regulations to abide by. Regardless, I don't understand how someone who hasn't been through SERE would know how to conduct themselves in that situation.

I was arrested for a public intoxication the year prior to being selected. As long as your honest, upfront, and don't try to blame the police, bartender, etc for what happened, you will set yourself up the best you can given the circumstances.

I can tell you cal fire and most USFS contractors pay a lot more then then WA's DNR. That article is putting there state's pay scale on blast, that's not an accurate reflection of the rest of the fire service.
