    Question about PRK eligibility

Yes, it could return, but you need 20/40 to qualify for Flight School. You can also get the surgery again, though LASIK is a much better option for touchups, as the recovery is at least 10-20 times faster than PRK. I was worried about the same thing when I was doing mine, but I don't think its a...

If anyone is getting to the airport at a similar time on the 8th, maybe we could share a cab. I don't have a ticket yet, but when I do, I will post the time.

For those of you guys who are flying, how do you plan on getting from the providence airport to Newport. I was told to get a taxi and keep the receipt and the Navy will reimburse, but that's gotta be one expensive taxi ride.

    LASIK Now an Option

USN. I was granted the LASIK Waiver. I don't know if it was from NAMI or BUMED, it just said from the department of the Navy. There will be additional tests in NAMI for it when I get there to get into the LASIK in aviation research protocol.

Ya that is why I choose LASIK. My Doctor knew a current navy doctor in San Diego and recommended LASIK. There was no recovery to speak of. I went from 20/400 to 20/25 day 1 and 20/20 after the first week. If my vision slips and I need LASIK again, it will be a real quick event hopefully.

Ya, they have a LASIK in student naval aviators now also. I didn't know this until my doctor told me when I was about to get PRK. But as with all Naval Aviators, NAMI has the final say in aviation status.

    LASIK Now an Option

I was pro rec'ed in nov 2010 and had LASIK January 27 2011. I was denied the 3 month and justwas granted the waiver from my 6 month. My OCS date is oct 9. I think LASIK requires a 6 month wait right now.

    LASIK Now an Option

My Lasik waiver got rejected after the 3 month period, they said it has to be 6. My 6 month post op is in a few weeks.

    PRK Flight Physical Timeline

I read it was less than -6 for 3 month wait. -6 up to -8 is 6 months.
  12. C

    LASIK Now an Option

PRK is a 3 month wait if your refraction is less than -6.00 and a 6 month wait if your between -6 and -8 diopters. LASIK only says 3 months regardless of refractive error. It makes sense since the recovery is much quicker. I am still waiting for my medical documents to get to my recruiter...

    LASIK Now an Option

And what type do you think this is? I quote from the document I posted: "Wavefront-guided (e.g., VISX CustomVue, or equivalent) or wavefront-optimized and femtosecond keratome (e.g., IntraLase, or equivalent) LASIK procedure is STRONGLY ENCOURAGED as the LASIK treatment of choice in Naval...

    LASIK Now an Option

My ophthalmologist knew a Navy doctor and he contacted him. He told me LASIK was allowed so I asked my recruiter, who said PRK only initially. However he then got in contact with NAMI and did confirm that LASIK is now allowed for civilian applicants. LASIK used to be allowed only for current...

    LASIK Now an Option

After extensive review with my ophthalmologist, recruiter, and Naval Aerospace Medical Institute, I found out the Navy now allows civilian applicants to undergo LASIK. I attached a pdf information sheet I received. I was selected in the Nov 2010 boards SNA and had LASIK done 2 weeks ago...

    My PRK Problems

I am in a similar boat as you. I am a Flight Instructor in Houston. I did some instructing at Renton municipal. Nice area. Good luck with your PRK. I am sure it will get better soon. We do have to go through a huge amount to get selected, but i bet its nothing compared to what we are going...

    NFO OCS Entry Date

I don't think he is lying. I haven't talked to him in a while and was just wondering if anyone knew. I was selected for aviator and NFO and I am about to get PRK. I am just trying to keep up with both paths right now. :)

    NFO OCS Entry Date

My recruiter told me several months back that wait times right now for NFO OCS dates are fall of 2011, I guess due to a lower need right now. Can anyone else confirm this?

    PRK After Pro Rec SNA?

Ya, I am sure there is gonna be another long process to deal with it for the waiver. But I might as well get used to it. This is only the beginning. For now I am thrilled I am gonna be out of contacts soon, after having needed glasses since I was 7 or 8 years old.

    PRK After Pro Rec SNA?

I was selected on the November board and I will be getting PRK next week. My recruiter told me to get PRK then wait the 6 months and get the waiver. He said I should have no problem getting a waiver. If I was going to have to reapply again because I am past this supposed 90 day time, then he...

    PRK After Pro Rec SNA?

Sounds good. I have been thinking about what I will do if I can't get PRK. Mine is a little more complicated in that I am already a FAA Flight Instructor and a career as an airline pilot is only a year or so away. So if I pick NFO, more or less I am giving up a pilot career.

    PRK After Pro Rec SNA?

I am in a similar boat as you. I applied as sna knowing I would need it. I am seeing the doc this week and I was selected last week as sna and nfo. As for the time delay my recruiter said even with the 6 month wait sna would enter similar time as nfo due to nfo entry delays right now. Id say...

That seems a bit high. I heard form my recruiter that the overall officer acceptance rate is around 25-30%. For aviators, I would think it would even be slightly lower.

    New NFO Applicant

My OSO informed me today that there is no NFO slots until 2011 and that I would be waiting about a year to begin OCS as an NFO.
